non of my methods involve butter
if brown bread i toast on side then put the cheese on the other , return to grill until bubbling then put a shake of gresh ground pepper
i dont bother to grill the other side if its white just add the cheese then pepper

Rose, I dont have grill either, but I still enjoy cheese on toast.
Do you have a toaster?
If so, toast the bread as normal, then put cheese on one side (butter as well if liked)
Then pop the slices in the microwave on high for 1 - 2 minutes.
Result, slices of toast with melted cheese on top

Admits to not being a lover of Marmite. I've never tried those toastie bags. Then again, it's ages since I've had cheese on toast. I've had cheese toasties though.

Try a scraping of English mustard underneath the cheese...it makes it cheesier....

I sit in the bit of butter (or spread) side.
First toast in the toaster, put the grill on and grate the cheese, then bit of butter on the toast, cheese on that and under the grill.
I used to do a fancy one with a thinly sliced mushroom on top of the cheese and then a slice or two of bacon (already cooked one side, placed on top of the melted cheese to finish off.

Marmite, worcester sauce - yuk, yuk, yuk
And what is this nonsense about GRATED cheese - toast one side of bread, butter the untoasted side, top with SLICED cheese and pop under the grill until the cheese bubbles and starts to brown, trim off the crusts and cut into triangles.

When we do have cheese on toast, we toast both sides of the bread.
