The Duchess of Cambridge was hoping for a son and her wish has come true, after she gave birth to a baby boy this afternoon.

The baby weighed 8lbs 6oz and was born at 4.24pm, the palace said.

"Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well and will remain in hospital overnight," Kensington Palace said in a statement.

"The Duke of Cambridge was present for the birth. The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry and members of both families have been informed and are delighted with the news.

All those babies born on the same day are to be given a little memento....think it was to be a special little coin or something like that in a little pouch.

Guess some families will treasure this .....some of course might put them straight on eBay......

The coverage may be a little OTT for some but the birth of a baby should be a joyous event for most families.....I cannot imagine why their joy would be overshadowed by the Royal birth.....its a special day for all concerned..Royal or not.

I cried again when they came out. That boy really looked like he was waving his little hand awwwww. I think they were lovely coming out to the crowd and spending time talking like that!!!!. She looked so well our Kate did not look like she had given birth at all bless her. Awwww its so lovely a new baby. Makes us women broody i think???.
