Yes...you are correct Saasher. I am by no means perfect and do make grammatical mistakes sometimes, but if you spot one....go ahead......I can take it!

But the one that really makes me groan is when people say 'OFF OF'. I hear it and see it written more and more often and it seems to have crept into the English language. Where ever did that originate?

My Cockney Stepmother has always said OFF OF.

in spite of this it really annoys me when I see it in a book.

Cee Dee.....I never knew that.....but I wasn't a fan of the Rolling Stones! Thanks for pointing it out. It seems that 'off of' has been around longer than I thought.

Lambsy......it's Déjà Vu! Sorry,......I couldn't tie my hands down!

I wouldn't be so rude , I tend to accept people for what they are, mainly because I hope they accept me for what I am, spelling mistakes not withstanding. It's not a perfect world so why should we expect people to be perfect!. lol.

I doubt anyone does expect others or ourselves to be perfect, and I don't think anyone is saying that.

The thread is only about pet hates.  I expect that almost everyone can think of things that may not be important but they find irritating.

I find it irritating when people feel the need to shout in capitals and huge letters a lot on forums, rather than to just emphasise the occasional thing that's important.  But each to their own and it's entirely up to them to shout if they want to.  My finding it irritating might be irrational, and it's irrelevant, but it happens to be one of my pet hates on forums. All that we are is what we have thought.

People who start a question *I mean* and pepper a sentance with *you know*

I mean who dont know how to spell sentence you know.

Lambsy, I agree with you whole heartedly.

I watch a lot of game shows, and that is something that always bugs me.

On the other side, I always remember Hughie Green on Double Your Money, he always got it right.

I remember him saying "That is the wrong answer to the question"

Photobucket

I hate it when people state time periods such as "In the past a thousand years" and not "In the past one thousand years".

It even sounds wrong when they say it.

I too find hysterical shouting irritating. It's also considered rude to write in capital characters. If the people who insist on typing in upper case merely want to emphasise a point, italics (or underlining) should suffice.
Writing in coloured crayons also infuriates me. It's as if the poster's contribution is of extreme and paramount importance above all  others, and executed in order to stand out and be recognised. Coloured text is fine if the poster is quoting someone, or if for instance they are writing a verse from a poem or a song, in order to distinguish it from the rest of the composition. Otherwise leave it au naturale. We've all seen you !

I am very guilty of writing in what i call SHOUTY CAPITALS!!!. LOL.

I think its because i feel so strongly it overwhelms me and ive really got to emphasise my point. I think a lot of others do it but its just a persons way of expressing themselves. I should have been a Suffragette in olden times, thats what i say to myself LOL. Theres no malice meant only if someone is nasty then i will fight back. Im not a DOORMAT!!. LOLWoman LOL

Rudeness and those who show no respect but repeatedly demand it for themselves.

Kids these days, when talking use "like"  every 3rd or 4th word. And they use it instead of "said"

I was like when

so I was like OK what time

and she was like 7 oclock

so I was like OK I'll see you there

so she was like OK good

Oh, and that stupid street accent (or whatever it's called) that they use. It makes me want to slap them.
