It was discovered that with many of the warning sounds emitted when something went wrong in an aircraft cockpit, the first thing that concerned the crew was how to stop the noise rather than sort out the problem.
It's much the same with a lot of advertising, all the unwilling recipient can think of is how to stop them thus defeating the whole object.
