You Silly Brits! You've done it again! FANY!!! Hee, hee

Well, I just found an American WW2 US Navy pin for the ladies who volunteered in the States during the War - WAVES, they were called.  And that stood for Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service...  As a lark, I tried to look up something British, and I found FANY or more specifically, the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry, an official British force for volunetter ladies.    BEAUTIFUL!!!  So help me, if I can ever afford a vacation, it will be to your wonderful island.  You never disappoint!  Never!

Sill, I wonder what your WW2 lady volunteers thought about that title....heee, heee... (heee heee - blush)

What makes it even sillier is what the word, near enough, means in our two different languages.

Reno , in the UK it doesn't mean your Butt, it means something else entirely, the only way to say it, is that Men don't have one.

Numerous Americans, just don't get, why they get such a reaction to using the word in the UK and some scenes in US Movies, can get Brits falling about laughing, for something the script writers, didn't even think about.

Oh, no!  That's even better!  I've got to get over there!!!!  I remember the WW2 movies, where the Brits would say about the American troops, "over-sexed, over-paid, and over here!!"   Lordy, it's dull here in Eugene, Oregon, where it rains a lot!!!

Reno .... The thing that you Colonials call a "Fanny bag" is called a "Bum bag" over here which is really weird 'cos it is usually held at the front of the body for easy access. But as you can see, your word but with our translation makes more sense than our word.

We live in a crazy, mixed up world. :^O

Imagine the bemusement of some G.I.s when arriving at a station in Britain, saw a notice saying 'Keep your pecker up'. :^O

Perhaps it's time we had a list of "proper words" and how to pronounce them for our American cousins?

We've not had a list for a while so I'll start?

It's buoy not boo-ee.

It's cAnnOn  not cennen.

It's plough not plow.

It's shot not sharte.

Carry on....... ]:)

And the really embarrassing moment when I did a greyhound coast to coast trip, stopped at a all-in-one shop/cafe, wanted an 'eraser' ('cos I was keeping a diary and I'd used up the one on the pencil) - but I didn't think to ask for 'an eraser', did I.

:_|

The looks I got, when I kept repeating the R word thinking that if I kept trying to say it they'd understand eventually!!

I was rescued by a small girl coming up to the serving counter who was on the same bus and knew what I wanted.

Back in the 80's as a young girl, I lived in Southern Germany for a few years, working for the American Armed Forces.

The first time I heard a soldier make a remark about my "fanny", well, it was only due to some vigilant friends that stopped him from getting a black eye!!  😄

Speaking of which, there was a very famous and very expensive steak house restaurant in Pasadena, California, for many years which had a golden rooster mounted on a weather vane on their roof.  It was named "The Golden Cock."  In this instance, of course, that word was a synonym for rooster!!!  Or, more specifically, a golden rooster.  They had the most wonderful  red cabbage salad, steaks, etc.  You paid for it, of course.  But it was worth it.

They were located in the Clearman's Village, right next door to the North Woods Inn, which they also owned.   Their name was quietly changed in the 1960's.  Way too many bizarre phone calls, I suppose.  At the time, I was working with the Auto Club in Pasadena, and people often asked about the place.  Meanwhile, the auto club's phone number was one digit different from that of an infamous porno movie house, also located in Pasadena.

I am telling you, we got some very strange phone calls....
