What's the story with Formula 1?

Am I missing something? Are F1 drivers psychic?

After the race at Silverstone where drivers had problems with punctures they reportedly said, "We'll boycott the next race if the tyre problem isn't fixed."

OK, how will they know if the problem has been sorted out? Or do they mean that they will boycott the race when they have already driven half of it?

Confused of Blackburn.

I'm neither an F1 nor a tyre expert, Stevie, but I think four "pops" in one race is a bit excessive, therefore, there seems to be a problem with the tyres. I'm guessing they will demand a whole new batch of tyres which will have to undergo the most rigorous testing before the drivers will agree to use them?? Several practice runs maybe?

At Silverstone one tyre exploded during qualifying so they had a warning that all was not well. So far at the Nurburgring there have been no mishaps, so I guess they have some more confidence that things are better.

But my understanding is that the real improvement should come at the next race because Pirelli are changing the steel part of the tyre for one made of Kevlar. At least if that explodes it is supposed to be less dangerous if the bits hit another car or driver.

It's also come to light that the teams have been playing fast and loose with the recommended operating conditions of the tires

1. Running them at far lower pressures than Pirelli recommended (20psi front and 19psi rear), one team was reported to be running 15/14

2. Running 'left' tyres on the right and vice versa

3. running tyres at far higher camber than recommended

all of the above will give improved traction, and heating of they tyre, but also increase wear and make them more likely to puncture (and then fail if punctured)

now the FIA has made these recommended operating windows mandatory, together with the change to an inner Kevlar type rather than steel layer inside the tyre this should make them safe
