I've been away from ebay for 18 months, because of health problems. Now back I'm finding that there are offers on a lot of my posts, this was rarely the case before.
These offers are of course private and often below the starting price. This devalues the article whereas a bid will increase the value, making it obvious that others want it. My feeling is that an offer should be public or maybe I can turn them off, can I ? What do there think , maybe a counter saying how many offers made ?

Yes, you can certainly leave out a Best Offer option when listing your items.
I'm sure the listing form looks a little different if you've returned from selling after a long break. Scroll down the listing form to Pricing >> Format and where you add the price of the item, just beneath deselect the Best Offer option.
Remember if adding a Best Offer to an auction item, this will disappear when the first bid is placed, so essential to always start the auction for the lowest amount you are happy to receive, it cannot sell for less. Your Braun camera for example, you have staarted the auction for £5.00 if you only receive one bid, you are obliged to sell to for £5, if you're happy with that, then it's fine.
However, hence the importance of starting auctions for the price you want to receive.
Revise any auctions you feel necessary before they receive their first bid, then no corrections can be made.
