A leading American cardinal has told BuzzFeed that he is to be demoted from his position running the Catholic Church justice system. Cardinal Raymond Burke is a staunch critic of Pope Francis' moves to soften the Church's stance on homosexuality. He said that he was to be moved to the far less senior post of patron of the sovereign military order of Malta. Pope Francis is leading a council in the Vatican on possible reforms to Church teaching on social issues. A preliminary report on the initial discussions at the extraordinary Synod on the family was released on Monday.

But what of his sexuality? How would that sit in a Church which, although more open about its teachings, still doesn't allow gay priests? "Look," said Fr Gabriel outside Donegal Town court house, "I am who I am."

Pope Francis knows how dangerously far Rome is now from the life of ordinary Catholics. He knows that men like Burke want to maintain that distance. It’s quite likely Francis was thinking of Burke in 2013 when he said: “Let us think of the damage done to the People of God by men and women of the church who are careerists, climbers, who 'use' the People, the Church, our brothers and sisters - those they should be serving - as a springboard for their own ends and personal ambitions. These people do the church great harm.” Giving an interview to every religious outlet that would listen this week, the truth about Burke still emerged. He’s yesterday's man. He may not like that the Vatican’s took its first tentative steps toward the 21 century this week, he may not like the ideas coming out of the synod, but - however provisional Monday’s report turns out to be - it is already the basis of every future discussion.

Just seen on the news Tommy...his. Bishops and Cardinals are having none of it. They refused to back him...so the Catholic Church is still in the Dark Ages. What hypocrites they are...half of them are probably gay anyway.

Call it the three no’s: no communion for divorcees, no cohabitation for loving couples, and no gays today or ever. Pope Francis may have exchanged his gilded palaces for a humble room and a modest bed, but it’s clear at last that it was only a change of style, not substance. The church has been a cold house for gay Catholics for centuries, but this weekend the majority of bishops went further and closed Christ’s door. Message: Your love is not love. It is not even debatable. Keep out.
