Corbyn in the Calais 'Jungle' camp.

Read all about it:

He says: ''Let in all refugee children''. On a chaotic tour of the Calais camp, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn calls for Britain to open it's doors to 'hundreds of thousands'. Corbyn suggested UK should admit unaccompanied children immediately. His call came on tour of two migrant camps in Dunkirk and Calais.

Excuse me! These vulnerable children are already in a civilised country, i. e. France, so why aren't they looking after their welfare?

'Unaccompanied children'. Are you really that dense Mr Corbyn? These 'children' have made their way through Europe, found their way to Calais. Hang on .... I think that's Mum and Dad peeping around the corner. Perhaps as soon as all of the 'unaccompanied children' establish themselves on British shores, the relatives will come out of the woodwork with a demand to be reunited with their 'lost youngsters'.

I was comparing my picture in my attachment to these people in that camp. And they in the camp IMO should count their lucky stars. Many in obviously expensive gear, and very well fed. Why are some hiding their faces? With so many homeless on our streets your priorities are wrong!!!  Mr (lovely me?) Corbyn.

Perhaps if the children  had worn ragged clothes and didn't look very well fed they might have garnered a bit more sympathy, but somehow i doubt it,and isn't it a bit peculiar when people complain about asylum seekers they suddenly remember people in their own country also suffering, but are very quiet about home grown problems other times?

Why are they hiding their faces? in case they bump into you !

I imagined that will be the case Petal...but I am wondering how they get to Europe. Do they arrive in the boats that go to Greece? Alone, and without their parents? Or do they arrive in Greece with their parents and are then abandoned?  And how old are these 'children'? I have heard boys of 16 years described as 'children'. However they get to Europe..it seems pretty callous of their parents.

Something I wondered about as well.

According to UNICEF many are brought here by traffickers then there are those who have become split from their parents during mass exoduses from areas of conflict and have been assisted by other refugees or even more tragically their parents have died during their travels.  Finally there are those whose family have paid for their escape from conflict and poverty in the hope that they will find a better life over here.

The problem they have is choosing who they join to fight in defence of their country.  If they join ISIS they are labelled terrorists by the rest of the world and are bombed by the US and others, join a rebel group and they are terrorists according to the recognised government in Syria and bombed by Russia and others, join the government forces and they are labelled authoritarians and haters of democracy and are bombed by everyone.

Which group would you suggest they join?

Hello Astro.  I will try.

These ''children'', unless they are teenagers, have not travelled thousands of miles unaccompanied. Someone must have been looking after them during the time this journey has taken, telling them what to do and where to go, feeding them clothing them, etc.

I'm sure their relatives are very close at hand, waiting for this ''unaccompanied child'' card to be played so they can suddenly be found. These children are not in a third world country, they are in France. It is the French authorities responsibility to look after them. If the children were in Britain, we wouldn't expect France to look after them.

Britain took in more than it's fair share of migrants and asylum seekers when Blair was PM. Did he ask our people? I think not. And it seems hardly anyone knew what was going on until they felt they were in a foreign country. Then our leaders apologised saying: ''they got it wrong''. I say they did. Didn't quite get enough votes from it did you Mr Blair.

Then who the hell amongst our leaders (particularly in the last 20 -  years) has listened to what OUR people want ? Has their been any doubt what they wanted? You cannot trust these 'Opinon Polls'. In matters that could not be more serious than this the people must have their say. A referendum is needed NOW. Not when those that wont listen to us say. To hell with them.

I'm not convinced - do we really want millions more individuals taking part in armed conflict - isn't the ultimate aim to achieve peace in that part of the world rather than armageddon?

From what I can find on the internet the idea that when unaccompanied children are 'settled' their parents suddenly appear is alarmist and an unsubstantiated claim.

As to how many we can handle the answer has to be I don't know - undoubtedly accepting refugees causes a level of hardship for citizens of the host nation - on a humanitarian level though is that hardship more or less than that being suffered by the refugees?

The government are currently considering taking in 3,000 of the 26,000 unaccompanied children who arrived in Europe last year.  A reasonable share considering our size in the EU.  The equally worrying aspect of the problem in my view is not the sudden appearance of parents in the future but the likely future for the children if they aren't looked after by the nations of Europe.  How many will fall into the hands of traffikers, paedophiles, pimps and labour gangs or just simply disappear into the general population - they may well disappear from the headlines but they're not going to disappear in real life.

Sweden had an open door policy in much the same vein as Germany but found that their support services became overwhelmed and have now closed the 'door' which demonstrates to my mind that we need a cooperative effort across the nations of Europe and not one where individual nations for whatever reason turn round and say we don't want to take part.

Thank you Mere...I saw on TV last night that children arrive in Europe minus their families, but carrying documents to show their identity and where they have come from. This is very different from the thousands of young men who have arrived without any documentation, probably so they cannot be sent back. The fact that these children have papers does seem to suggest that at some stage they will be joined or reunited with their families.

I fail to see why this country should add to the millions of people we have who live in poverty, without homes, without jobs etc. We have a desperate shortage of homes for the people who live here already, and building homes on flood plains as is being done now, is not the answer. Neither is building on our precious green spaces the answer.

we need a long term view when dealing with this problem. Fast forward 20 years...all these thousands of immigrants that we have promised to take will have families of their own, and we will need double , or treble the amount  that we need now, at this moment.

This is a tiny island....and we are full. Add to this the fact that these people cannot live peaceably among themselves...they will bring their divisive sectarianism here with them, and what problems will that cause?

The situation is very very grave...and who knows what will happen. I think a lot of people are thinking the same as I am...I am sorry for these people, but there is not one thing I can do about their situation, and I am thinking that I just do not care any more. It is just depressing.

The reason they have no documentation is because the've destroyed them. Risible when you discover that when the authorities do find them - them that are actually working incidentally, but working illegally - in fast food outlets, restaurants, and cafes owned by people of their own nationality usually, they are then given bail to turn up at the nearest police station with the necessary documents. So what happens ? They scurry off into the night, and are lost again. Absolutely barmy.

Regarding Corbyn, the man is a wingnut of the highest order. Whenever I see him, I view him with an Aldermaston 'Ban The Bomb' sign behind his head. This individual will do the Labour Party irreparable damage in the long run. Some of his policies are commendable, but others way off beam. He's a latter day Hippie, who hasn't moved forward with the times.

I think that article puts the whole situation into perspective.

"The number of unaccompanied asylum seeking children arriving has slowed to around 15 a week since the winter hit, but there are fears the numbers will pick up again as spring approaches.

Mr Oakford said he expects the number to rise to around 40 to 50 a month."

A nation of 20+ million households should be able to cope with that number of additional children without even blinking - the problems that Kent are facing is down to crazy legislation, that could be easily changed, which puts responsibilty for their care entirely on the shoulders of a small county rather than on the country as a whole.

It is a similar problem, on a national scale, to that which countries like Greece, Turkey, Jordan and Lebanon are facing on a European and global scale.

One of the pictures in your link CeeDee, showed a very small baby. How on earth did that baby arrive unaccompanied...it obviously couldn't, as it couldn't walk. It must have been brought in by adults, probably it's parents. I have a feeling that these photographs of sweet little children are used as propaganda, and they are not as they appear. Just as the photograph of the little drowned boy Alain was flashed around the world.
