Maybe me being a cynical auld bugger but I would open the boxes to make sure and as you say I would give them a short charge just to be sure nothing untoward happens !
As I said though ! I am a cynical auld bugger !

Tim .... I don't sell phones or other techie type stuff much nowadays, but if I did have one or more of such items for sale I would certainly leave one of them charging overnight and then, in the morning, check it out just to confirm that the basic functions work. I would probably go so far as to insert a SIM card and try phoning my own landline number and then reverse the operation and use my landline phone to send a call to the mobi. The thing is, it's a lot easier to sell something that you know works. Especially if you have lots of photos.
Good luck with it.

Many thanx dark_castle1 Its great to be back 🙂
Hiya and welcome Kimmy 🙂
Stevie if I did that it may be thought Id used the items even though Id know I hadnt. Id like to leave them in their sealed boxes mbut saying that it would be better to know exactly what they did so maybe but only 30 mins charge. That would be enough to see what was on these items.

I would leave the batteries alone ,every phone i have ever seen says in the instructions to charge fully before use
