Pancake Day was quite an "event" but not much is made of it today? You hardly see or hear much mention of it?

In all honesty CD I think it is at least three or four years since I heard anyone mention it. Is this a sign of the times ?

In a small village near to me schoolchildren escape on shrove Tuesday and visit houses saying please a pancakei. Traditionally they would receive something toward making a pancake. These days more like a packet of hariboes,
For some reason many find pancakes a pain to make, no idea why but Ilike em sweet or savoury.

Pancakes are delicious.  Especially when squeezed with lemon.

Why aren't they available in Supermarkets.  In a convenient frozen form, so they can be cooked quickly in a microwave.

I think things like pancakes go soggy in a microwave and would be nothing like the real thing done in a frying pan - which are anyway quick to make.

I forgot it was Shrove Tuesday- thanks.  I have a lemon so off to make some.

It was always an " event " when the children were young ....always made them . However they are all grown up now with homes of their own, didnt even realise that it was Shrove Tuesday until earlier today.

Of course at one time Pancake Races used to be a big thing but it seems that Health and Safety Issues put an end to those ....

Many years ago a close relative was warden at a sheltered housing complex. Among the residents was a lovely lady, well into her eighties yet fit as a fiddle. She would twice weekly walk to her sons house and back 14 miles in total. Every morning the warden visited each of the 22 flats to see all was well and chat for a while, on arrival at the elderly ladies flat she knocked and entered and Mrs K was in the kitchen cleaning the windows, good morning Mrs k how are you today? I'm well came the reply I wish I could say the same for this shammy leather, I have several of them and they just fall apart when I use them, I've a good mind to take them back to the coop. Thee warden looked at the window and there was evidence of disintegrated bits stuck at various places, so she asked Mrs k to show her the packet, she bent down and took a plate from under the sink, close inspection revealed that Mrs k had in fact been using some left over pancakes. Despite her wonderful fitness, sadly she was in the grips of early dementia, she had sufficient of her marbles left to have a good laugh about it.

I rememeber my Grandad making countless pancakes on the "griddle " ? and My Sister and I , eating them , some with butter , some with jam as well , we whooped with delight when he put sultanas in them as well ! , what a treat

Must have been 7 or 8 back in early 70's

I think Pancake day started fading into memory , when the working class themselves started their terminal decline , about the time when peeling a potatoe became onerous , and "daytime telly " , started to distract he working class , and they forgot that self reliance and "make do and mend " , had served them well for centuries .

Now its gone for ever ,

Just think some flour milk and eggs ,, a bit of butter , Jam ? Syrup ? ,,, £5 - £6 of ingrediants and you could feed 10 !

 for 50p a head

Folks now would sooner go down the foobank , than make ends meet now .

I been 12 years on ebay and had 1000's of sales and I trust people more than ever now
