Adverts? Love 'em or hate 'em?

Although some are amusing and others are "interesting" doncha get fed up of the sheer volume and repetitiveness?

We are bombarded from all directions whether it be on the TV, the radio, in newspapers (umpteen flyers included) not the mention the absolute monotony of them (in all their forms) on the net.

Due to them being rammed down our throats all the time do you think they actually have the oposite effect to their intention? ie far from encouraging us to buy whatever they're promoting, they encourage us to ignore them in various ways, like changing channels or muting the sound, binning flyers unread and of course blocking adverts on the net.

The old comment "It must be worth their while or they wouldn't do it" isn't really backed up by any proper "research" like comparing periods of no adverts with episodes of advertising, advertising sparily or times spent bombarding the media.

One thing the people advertising on TV should do is the watch their stupid adverts with the sound muted!

Too much of anything, desensitises you to it; something many people, who constantly keep ramming stuff down your throat, can't seem to grasp.

I'd rather sit through thirty minutes of TV adverts than endure the same period watching a soap, sixty minutes of sheer purgatory viewing  'X Factor', or ninety minutes of pure agony watching a football match. Much more interesting and entertaining.

Some adverts are cleverly made and more interesting than some programmes. They probably put more effort into adverts than they do programmes actually seeing as though they dont have much to offer just more BORING REPEATS!!!!!. OVER and OVER!. Some adverts like for N*****E C****E tell a story that continues on into the next seasons offering. All in all their interesting!.Woman Very Happy

The annoying thing for me are the NON-adverts on BBC. Now, we all know that, officially, they can't have tham. so why is it that everytime there's a break, there are breaks about what adverts are coming on showing what adverts are coming on showing what will be shown on the next set of adverts. It gets even worse when we get closer to the time limit. It seems that the adverts get longer and more and more boring.

What annoys me more is the adverts for next weeks episode that they tag onto the end of programmes now. If ive enjoyed the first episode I want to see the rest without spoliers. If I have not enjoyed it showing me highlights of what I am going to miss next week will not make me want to watch it anymore.

I think you'd find that organisations put a lot of time and effort into measuring the effectiveness of their marketing campaigns. They will compare and contrast all sorts of criteria.

That's not so, they manipulate things to show what they want to show and also, the supposed "figures", when given at all are from a small sample over a short time frame.

Most Companies like people who do the Company Dance while wearing the Company Hat as they sing the Company Song. In other words, they like "Yes" men, they don't like people who try to promote a well reasoned argument which differs from the Company Line.

It isn't just TV adverts, see my OP.

With particular reference to the TV, the frequency of some adverts just cause annoyance and with them bombarding every advert break, will, in the end, be counter-productive.

I tend to record anything serious that I want to watch and then fast forward the adverts. Films series etc.
Adverts drive me nuts especially insurance and ambulance chasers.
The bbc are annoying keep showing 'asverts' for programmes coming up in a 6 weeks or more over and over and over again. I.e. doctor who, strictly, and dont get me started on the Scottish coverage.

Adverts are a bit like the warning noises in aircraft cockpits, when they are far too loud and obtrusive a person's first thought is how to turn them off.

Okay, I understand where you're coming from, and you are right.

But.... I f you are watching certain TV Channels, then that is the price you have to pay.

Same with certain Radio Stations.

In my case Flyers and  some Mail go straight to the Recycling Bin.

I just don't listen to Local Radio Stations. (hate the ad jingles with a passion)

I record TV where ads are on, so I can fast forward, you only need to record 20 minutes in advance, to be advert free.

Spam email gets binned unopened.

I ignore adverts in newspapers, but am glad they are there, hopefully keeping the price of the Tabloids down.

Adverts will only get to you if you let them, and ads fund so much of our entertainment.

As for them being counterproductive, who cares, maybe they are, maybe they aren't, but as long as they fund my entertainment, I will tolerate them, and continue to hope that the people who want to advertise think that they are very productive.

Cee-Dee,

Are we talking about the same thing here? I'm talking about advertising and marketing whereas you appear to talking about corporate culture and identity!

In some cases this is part of the trick though. There are some adverts that totally miss the mark with me because I'll recognise an associated tune or dialogue after being exposed to an ad several times but I won't have a clue what's being advertise or who the associated company is.

However think of Coke, Hoover, Jeep and others that we are so desensitised to that they have become generic names for similar items. People do buy recognised brands and they often get recognition through advertising.

Must say Sky-Plus has been a God-Send; not only can we record and watch at our convenience while skipping adverts but I can also pause, go make a cuppa or do the washing up etc. and then return to view the programme and skip the adverts.

Advertising and marketing in its many forms does work.  From the extremes of television adverts which reach millions to shop window displays that may only be seen by a few hundred.

The more people that are exposed to a particular advert then the more there will be that get 'annoyed' by that advert but conversely the more who will be aware of a particular product or service.

Anyone who has owned or worked in a shop knows that changing a window display to show a change of or emphasis on a particular product has an almost immediate effect on sales.

Likewise junk mail - the majority may or may not go straight in the bin but the vast majority, if not all, companies that carry out such mail shots closely analyze the results and know that they can and do work.

When it comes to mass advertising it is easy to say they don't influence you - in lots of cases the adverts aren't intended to make you rush out and immediately buy their products but to simply keep you 'aware' of them.  I'd bet that that all those who claim adverts don't work on them could name at least two or three car insurance comparison sites!

True, but we make a point of not using companies whose ads particularly annoy us! Though on the other hand, a really irritating advert does get talked about!
