DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Hi all, pippy_oak here, posting under my brand new user name. Hopefully, Richard will pin this thread, as it seems a nice tidy place to pose specific questions about a book (Is it a 1st edition, what's it worth, where to find it etc. etc.) Don't just come here with a question. If you think you have the answer, then let's hear it.

Or we could just mooch around and learn a few things.

Cheers

Paul

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

'Hi Hefty H here.. I've got a book that I would like some help in pricing. "THE CHRISTIAN REFORMER or NEW EVANGELICAL MISCELLANY" vol 1 dated 1815.
Thanks'

Going to need a bit more than that. Who is the author, the publisher? How many volumes in the complete item?

Incomplete sets or single volumes don't usually do too well.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Hoping someone can help?

I have - what I believe to be - a 1st Edition, Charles Dickens Nicholas Nickleby. Half leather with marble boards. It has the inscribed picture of Dickens and is dedicated to W.C.Macready. Illustrations by Phiz.

There are not dates so I am not sure if it is 1st Edition. The 'odd' thing is that the spine doesnt have anything on it apart from:
E.755.

Its in average condition at best.

Anyone enlighten me on value and other detail?

Thanks

Carl

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Hi, Please can anybody help?.I have an old first edition book - the Universal Biography of Eminent Persons in all Ages and Countries, quarto edition(London, 1808), but when it comes to finding out about it im blinded by the internet in this subject. Does anyone know about this book (e.g. how many were printed ect. or a way for me to research it ?) as i feel that listing it on ebay at my normal low start may have been a big mistake. Thankyou, Pete.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

carlgparker, most Dickens firsts were 'triple deckers' - printed in 3 volumes. The 'E.755' on the spine is probably a library identification mark and shows the book is ex-library.

Also the book trade doesn't have a condition designation of 'average'. You have Fine, Very Good, Good and Poor to choose from, each having its own guidelines. Refer to 'Book & Magazine Collector' magazine for further details.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

I have a book titled Seventeen Years Among the Sea Dyaks of Borneo by Edwin H Gomes. Published 1911 by Seeley & Co. It has the folded map at the rear of the book. The title page is inscribed to The Revd. A Botterill and signed and dated by the author Feb 4 1918.

It's in good condition - a bit of foxing and a 1/4 inch pull tear to the top of the spine.

Any idea of value and would Ebay be the place to list:O

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Sounds about like the second on this list...

http://www.abebooks.co.uk/servlet/SearchResults?bi=0&bx=off&ds=30&sortby=1&sts=t&tn=Seventeen+Years+Among+the+Sea+Dyaks+of+Borneo&x=96&y=6

...but I'd add £50 or so for the 'signed' factor, considering that the author is unlikely to be signing any more.

If the clergyman involved had any standing you could add even more.

As for is eBay the place? Well, not at the ABE price. Pick a number you'd be happy to accept and go with that as the start price. Depending on what it had cost me I think I'd probably go for a 99.99 start and hope for a few bids.

Thanks for that, Sigma. I might give ebay a go at the price you suggest. Can't find any info on the Revd it is inscribed to.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Another book query. I can't find any info on this title-

The Rape Of Mr. Brown
Emanuel Francis Cefai
1979
Gozo Press
Softback

It's a strange science fiction novel with racial elements.

"The first man that came to our earth came from another planetary system hundreds of thousands of years ago. Some thousands of years later he was joined by another man from yet another different planet, hence our different races. The white man and the yellow man. The coloured man came to us much later and in a totally different way, and this is the story of how it might have happened..."

Book is inscribed to "Betty and Ken" and signed by author, August 1979.

Anyone heard of it before?

Not one I've come across, but the Gozo Press bit certainly makes it sound like a Malteser.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

What would you suggest the best thing is to do with an incomplete set of volumes, sell them individually or as an incomplete set?

The spine has 4 gilt emblems, would this be indicative of the number of volumes in the complete set?

Butler's Lives of the Fathers, Martyrs and Other Saints Volumes II, III, IV
undated circa 1920/30
400+pp per volume
Virtue & Co. LD.
numerous colour plates - all present
olive green & black boards with gilt title and design to front and spine
some bumping to extremities otherwise condition is very good.

Another title to eBay or not to eBay:

The Crime of the "Liza Jane"
Fergus Hume
Ward, Lock & Bowden Limited
1895
2 full page illustrations - both present, frontispiece loose.
Green cloth boards with dramatic design to front - boat on sea under a moonlit sky, hand clutching dagger and twisting snake around gilt title. Hand, snake and dagger motif to spine.
Some bumping to corners and head and tail of spine. A few spots of foxing.

Thanks, people.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

To the first....

http://www.abebooks.co.uk/servlet/SearchResults?bi=0&bx=off&ds=30&pn=virtue&sortby=1&sts=t&tn=Butler%27s+Lives+of+the+Fathers%2C+Martyrs+and+Other+Saints&x=119&y=11

Which is yours closest to? Are your missing volumes offered? Do their prices make it worthwhile completing the set yourself and then selling that?

To the second....

Fergus Hume is a very collectable Victorian/turn of the century crime writer. Sit down before you look at this link....

http://www.abebooks.co.uk/servlet/SearchResults?an=hume&bi=0&bx=off&ds=30&pn=ward&sortby=1&sts=t&tn=The+Crime+of+the+Liza+Jane&x=88&y=3

Good luck and nice find.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Thanks again, Sigma.

I don't think I'll be listing the Hume book with a 99p start and no reserve! Probably go for £1.04 with the way things are on eBay at the moment! Think I'll hang on until things improve.

Anyone know what time frame Ward Lock and Tyler published in? Wikipedia mentions everything but Tyler.

I have a WLT undated Edgar Allan Poe Tales of Mystery Imagination & Humour - 27 engravings. Small book, faded spine, some splitting to spine, leather title label pasted to spine: Tales and misprinted A. E. Poe.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Thanks for that information Manor House, it now gives me a better idea of the age of the Poe book.

Here's another

Stephen King
The Shining
New English Library
3rd Impression 1986
Hardback/Dustjacket

-seemingly a publisher's proof copy with pencilled notations and corrections throughout. Some chapter titles drop onto 2 lines, for example, with pencilled instruction to centralise and fit on one line; some capitalisations & italics are marked with "ignore"; wrongly placed dedication to Joe Hill King "to be given in vol 1 only on title sheet"

Could such an edition be considered 'unique'?

Ebay.com have the facility to put in the ISBN number and get the information up, so you can log in there and then cut and paste across if you wish. But double check your given the right information.

Ebay.co.uk don't have the facility.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

I've got a question for manor house books. Somebody I know has a copy of Poems by Elizabeth Barrett Browning published by Miles & Miles of Foresters Hall Clerkenwell she's convinced, because she hasn't found a copy on any of the sites I can't mention here, that she has got a rare and valuable copy which she is keen for me to sell. I've checked the publishers and found a couple of books published by them in the 1900s which make me think listing this book is not worth the effort. However, and this is the key point for her, the book has a printed dedication by EBB to her father dated 1844 so it must be an early edition! If you have any idea of a publication date and any more information about this edition I'd be overjoyed to hear from you. I'm not disparaging old ladies and their finds as I've done quite well out of some of them but this book just doesn't ring true.
