DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Hi all, pippy_oak here, posting under my brand new user name. Hopefully, Richard will pin this thread, as it seems a nice tidy place to pose specific questions about a book (Is it a 1st edition, what's it worth, where to find it etc. etc.) Don't just come here with a question. If you think you have the answer, then let's hear it.

Or we could just mooch around and learn a few things.

Cheers

Paul

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

You have a bid, so it's too late to change very much now. Your listing is fine, and nicely understated.

I see yours is the 4th edition, which was published around 1826.

Yes, it is SCARCE, but not RARE, as there are several other copies available for sale. In the book world, RARE is reserved for items of which only a few exist anywhere. As your book ran to at least 4 editions, it's a fair bet that there are hundreds, if not thousands, of copies still in existence.

Having said that, it is a very desirable item, and the lowest-priced copy I can find is about £90.

Good luck!!!!

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Thank you for your reply, I was a bit worried as I felt that the descriptions I immediately thought of (tatty, grubby, had a hard life) were probably not quite the correctly meaningful ones! I love the 'limited capacity' bit, it really should appeal to thousands if some of the posts on some of the other boards are anything to go by.

Hi Bes, good luck with the book. As a buyer, I would appreciate your honest description.

I see you live quite close to me.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Hi Victoria, thanks for the good wishes. I'm mortified because I can't get in the listing to correct the spelling mistake so just have to come up with excuses, it was really late,I was tired, blah blah. It took me absolutely ages to do because I don't really know how to do stuff on the computer, I'm more a typist who's strayed so it's just trial and error if there aren't any kids around to ask. That's why I never go on the 'write a book' thread, I don't know how to get the italics yet!

The box where you compose your posts, on the wide top edge of the frame is a smiley, clicking which gives you the paltry few available via eBay, a bold letter 'B', clicking which will make all highlighted text bold in the finished post, and after that is a slightly tipsy-looking 'I'.

XYZABC blah blah

To do that I typed the text, then left-clicked on the cursor just before 'X' and held the mouse button down. Then I dragged the cursor along the line to 'Z' and let the button go. This highlights the text covered. Then, without clicking again on anything else, move the mouse pointer to the slightly-tipsy 'I' button and left-click it.

That will put the highlighted text in italics. It's the same process for bold.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Sorry, mixed that up a bit - I dragged the cursor to the last 'h' in 'blah' and let the button go - not just to 'Z'. I'm sure you understood though.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Had to cancel and relist the book today, someone sent a question about postage so I thought it would be a good idea to leave it on the listing, and too late realised that his name and address was included on the message.Went to live help but they couldn't delete it so it had to go! I mailed the bidder and the questioner to explain so hope it will be alright.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Can find no reference to it.

An earlier title, 'Elizabethan Dragonflies' fetches about £20, but that's an unsigned copy of an unknown number.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Does anyone know if there's a market for late Victorian/early Edwardian children's books of the 'school prize' variety? Offhand I don't know any of the titles but they're the morally uplifting kind.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Some of them can be interesting, if only for the binding. Check any Blackie hardcovers of that period for Talwin Morris design.

Also check for illustrators names. Many are collectable.

DO YOU HAVE A BOOK QUESTION?

Would the illustrator's name be listed inside, or is it a case of looking up signatures or initials on the actual illustrations?
