Before I start I am using a Samsung S8 and Android 9, which I can't upgrade to Android 10.
I am aware of the web browser advice, which is what I am currently using. However, it is far from ideal, clunky and difficult to use and also does not provide notifications.
Does anyone know if the tech team are planning on modifying the new app to work for older Android or IoS platforms, given the number of complaints?
Or, is their final statement either update to Android 10 or use the browser if you can't? It seems ridiculous every other app on my phone (including banking ones) work okay but somehow the new Ebay App can only run on Android 10 or higher. Like many others I have no desire to give up a perfectly good phone.

Hi All,
I understand this is not the news you want to hear but this is not a technical issue. Ebay have recently updated the app which does mean if you have an older operating system such as android 9 and below and ios 16 and below they are no longer supported. Other ways to access ebay.co.uk can be done via your desktop or mobile web browser.
There is more information on it available here.
Thank you,
Kat

Hi @mush-7766 ,
Initially it was reported as a tech issue so we apologise for any confusion it has caused. They may have emailed that reply with the information they had to hand at the time. I'll have it followed up to ensure correct information is being shared. As it stands right now android 10 and ios 17 would be required to update to the latest version of the app.
Thank you,
Kat

I would appreciate if there was update given to the community that was not just the same generic statement from a few days ago.
If it is indeed correct Ebay are looking to resolve this for older Android/IoS users could this be confirmed either way?
If it is indeed the case Ebay are not going to update the app for Android 9 and below they need to make this clear rather than customer services giving out conflicting information. Obviously, long term people will need to get new devices or stop using Ebay, the browser version performs poorly on a mobile and is not a viable long term solution.
I do find it nonsensical that Natwest, PayPal, Underground and every other app on my phone works fine with Android 9, only Ebay since 04/02/2025 doesn't work. Could someone from the community team possibly explain what makes this app so special? If Android 9 is good enough for a bank and PayPal the same should apply to Ebay. As previously stated it's a relatively simple app.

Updating the eBay app: latest version guide, supported operating systems & troubleshooting tips
To summarize his posting... if you are on an older device and you are unable to use the latest version of the app... then basically, you are up the creek without a paddle.

The app has worked perfectly okay on my iPhone SE running iOS 15.8.3 since its launch.
And to echo what chinatoon20 has said above.
Updating the app without implementing backward compatibility for older devices is BAD DESIGN. If all of the big players like Amazon, YouTube, Facebook, BBC Sounds, and virtually all of the banking apps can do this, then why can’t eBay?
Removing compatibility for older devices is just plain stupid.
Accessing ebay.co.uk via a smartphone's browser is like viewing a 1999 basic HTML page designed by some spotty teenager.
Unfortunately, I, like many others, am not in a position to purchase a new device.
