third party collection, proof of pick up

I have sold a chair to a buyer with zero feedback, registered on ebay in 2020. They have arranged a shipping company to collect. i will ask them to sign on collection, but could this be a scam? Can the buyer claim they didn't recieve it or its damaged. They are due to collecty this morning so I am very nervous about what to do, as I coudl refund them but it is very short notice, woudl that be OK?

When a buyer uses their own carrier to collect, they lose all Ebay buyer protection (read Ebay's policies on this for yourself).  However, you would have no seller protection if an Unauthorised Account Use claim was opened against you. The only thing a payment processor will accept for such a claim is a proof of posting receipt, proving dispatch to the address on the payment confirmation email. Nothing else is accepted. You would lose the item, your money, and be charged a hefty admin fee too. This is why you should never accept PayPal for collection items. They should be paid for in cash or by bank transfer, once the buyer has fully examined the item and is happy with it.

So my advice is to cancel the Ebay transaction ('problem with buyer's address'). You are not obliged to sell to a buyer who rudely expects a service that is not offered on the listing. That will auto-refund the buyer, and credit the selling fee back to your Ebay account. Unfortunately, you'll be stuck with PayPal's payment processing fee. 😞

And make sure you add his Ebay ID to your Blocked Bidders List before you relist (if you relist - see below).  And if you're happy to securely package a chair for courier delivery, and wait in all day for the courier to collect (and I most certainly would not be), include that option and cost on your listing. It will get you more interest, and therefore possibly a higher price.

However, because you cannot stop a buyer from paying by PayPal, and PayPal no longer refund the payment processing fee, Ebay is not a viable option for collection items. I suggest you list them on Gumtree, Ebay's sister site. You'll have total control over how you're paid, and you can leave the ad running till someone has actually turned up in person, handed over cash, and taken the item away.

If the buyer leaves negative feedback, it will be fully removeable (because the buyer expected something not offered on the listing). So don't worry about that.

Because buyer arranged courier they invalidate MBG, so if they complain you don't have to refund them.

This is why buyers should always collect in person & pay cash.

MBG.

Not covered

  • Collection items damaged during shipment when shipment arranged by the buyer
  • Items collected by a third party on behalf of the buyer
  • Items not collected by the buyer

One very good reason to avoid payment by paypal if possible. Bear in mind what tobias has said, just in case there is a problem and buyer wants a refund. You might need to point out to Ebay that buyer arranged collection, as there are all sorts of possibilities for problems and I would not trust ebay's robots to know the rules.
