Buyer requested refund for item which didn't arrive. I refunded, item arrived, have request repaymen

I sold an item, the buyer requested refund as item had not arrived after alotted time, (not surprising with Royal Mail having problems).

I refunded buyer. I contacted buyer to asked whether the item had been received before I put a claim in to Royal Mail, the buyer replied saying the item had arrived. I again contacted the buyer asking them to repay and giving them my paypal details. I have not heard anything back from the buyer, what can I do. I am now out of pocket for the price of the item and postage and as the item has been received by the buyer I cannot make a claim to Royal Mail.

Any help would be appreciated.

I hope the buyer opened a not received case and you refunded through the case, otherwise you still pay the selling fee and have a defect as well.

You do not give any dates but depending on how the buyer funded theoriginal payment, it is possible that he has not even received the refund yet, so would be reluctant to pay again.

Refunds go back to source, so a Debit Card takes 7 days to return to Bank account, a Credit Card takes 30 days.

This is a common situation. With buyers able to open a case just one day after the estimated delivery date, and sellers now allowed just three days to respond, it can only get worse as delays mount in the Christmas post.

When a buyer claims a refund for non-delivery, and then keeps the item as well when it arrives, eBay does nothing to support the seller. Even when there is postal tracking proof that it was has been delivered.

Given that the item has now been delivered whether or not you can successfully appeal eBay's decision to refund the buyer will largely depend upon whether or not you posted the item using a tracked method of postage.  If you did not post the item using a tracked means of postage then unless the buyer refunds you voluntarily you've got no chance of being able to get your money back, as the following relies on you having solid proof of successful delivery as shown on the tracking number.

In the event that you posted the item via a fully tracked means of postage then if the tracking number is showing that the item has been delivered contact eBay Customer Services using the Call Me Back option and really argue your case strongly for removal of the defect, pointing out that given the current situation with regards to coronavirus and the fact that many courier companies are not operatiing at full strength owing to the absence of employees due to the virus it's unrealistic to expect deliveries to arrive within the same timeframes as could have been expected prior to the outbreak of the coronavirus.  If you are lucky enough to get through to somebody with an ounce of sense who not only sees the situation from your own perspective but also agrees with you then you may well end up succeeding in getting the defect removed, as well as getting eBay to remove any negative feedback that the buyer may have left for you in the meantime.

In the event that eBay are of no help in this matter contact PayPal's UK Customer Support Team on 0208 080 6500 or 0800 358 9448, making sure that you have all of the relevant information to hand - ie:  the customer's name and address, the PayPal transaction number and the tracking number that proves successful delivery of the item to the address provided on the PayPal confirmation of payment e-mail.  Explain to PayPal that eBay have issued the customer with an unjustified refund and point out that the tracking shows that the item has been successfully delivered.  PayPal tend to check cases far more thoroughly than eBay do, so once they see that the item has been successfully delivered they'll more than likely revoke eBay's unjustified refund and reinstate the funds back into your own account.  At least that way you've still got a chance of getting your money back for the sale, even if eBay refuse to help you.

At the end of the day the only way you are going to stand any realistic chance of being able to get the refund reversed and the funds reinstated back into your account is if you're prepared to fight your corner.  If necessary argue your case for all you're worth - eBay won't want to have to deal with somebody who's refusing to back down when he/she has got a strong argument against them and can prove that eBay's decision to refund the buyer was unjustified.  If you don't bother fighting your corner then not only will the buyer have received the item you sold him/her but he/she will have also got it for free at your expense, partly due to eBay's bad handling of Item Not Received claims during the current wave of the coronavirus pandemic and their failure to make the necessary allowances for delayed deliveries during this time, but also partly due to your decision not to stand your ground and give it your best shot with regards to getting the original decision overturned.
