Just as the title says...
Apparently a few disturbing/concerning changes to eBay coming in January & February 2025...
1) eBay Managed Shipping.
2) Payment Holds until delivery of a sold item has been confirmed.
So I'm a bit confused about number 1 - eBay's managed shipping... Not sure how this is going to work ? and whether it will be something like Packlink (only made compulsory instead of optional) ... or will it be like an "eBay Global Shipping program" type of setup where we send our sold items to eBay's 3rd party distributor and they then forward the item to the buyer by their default postal service ??... something tells me this could be Evri (Hermes ! ) - Not happy or comfortable with this ! knowing Evri aren't always great ! 😞
Moving on to number 2 - payment holds/delays until a sold items has been confirmed delivered (or 14 days have passed since buyer purchased the item and the buyer hasn't opened any cases during that time)... This can now be time consuming to get paid... Like eBay's new managed payments wasn't already slow enough !... now it's getting even slower !... not ideal if you've got little money in the bank that week and have to 'find money upfront' to pay for posting sold items (this can get pretty expensive if 2 or 3 heavy items which cost £20 to post sell on eBay at the same time to different buyers)... Oh wait a moment... Conveniently eBay now does managed shipping and they'll let you have an advance on your buyer's payment to cover shipping costs PROVIDING YOU BUY IT AT AN INFLATED RATE FROM EBAY ONLY !... How nice ! 😞
Now the debate of whether I should stay ? or go ?
I have always loved buying and selling on eBay for many years... Would it be worth carrying on with these new changes which are very worrying... or would it be better to do what the old saying says and QUIT WHILST YOU'RE AHEAD ???
All comments welcome - The good, the bad and the ugly - Let's know what you all think !
would a small private seller be skinned alive by the new 2025 eBay ? I wonder ! 🤔 🙄 😁

At the moment with Simple Delivery ebay lists the available options to buyers, all priced, so I doubt very much that 'free P&P' will be an option when/if sellers are forced into SD ... and if it is, it will be ebay's choice, not the seller!

I've always used Special Delivery on all my small to medium items and taken about 60% of the hit, I usually charge £4.95 and it is now something like £9.45 ! as Royal Mail put their prices up recently and will probably do it again in 2025 😞
Coming back to eBay... If like you say eBay forces everyone to use Special Delivery... it won't bother me too much as a seller, because I do this anyway to safeguard myself against items getting lost or stolen in the post... but under eBay's new managed shipping I am wondering could this be the end of most sellers being able to use 1st and 2nd class untracked post ?
In some ways this would be a huge plus for buyers needing their items in a hurry but could well make postage and packing costs very expensive and off putting, especially if eBay makes sellers foot the bill !, even if the high cost is passed on to buyers... This in itself could put buyers off from buying from eBay if they also have to pay high delivery costs or very smartly a small buyer fee !
I guess only time will tell !

As and when they bring Simple Delivery in.........before i decide our next move i am waiting to see if we can actually opt out or not.
We very recently had our Evri point/machine removed from our local small Tescos (about 100 yards from home). It never worked properly and was a complete pain for the staff so it was removed after about 1 year. Knowing Ebay they will try and force me to use that machine in Tescos lol
I cannot see how sellers can have all choices taken away from them. Another example....Glyn went yesterday to post a few items to the Post Office we always prefer to use. There was a notice "Post office closed for another 3 weeks" Basically those that run it have gone home abroad for a month.

Isnt Royal Mail about to be sold off to that Czech billionaire? I have heard mention that there will be one set fee for a certain service and he will be doing away with the different price structures. Something else that may well need to be taken into consideration in the future.

Yes, I read somewhere online recently that Royal Mail was being sold to a Czech billionaire... and will still be managed by UK government apparently... so I'm expecting a massive price rise again in January 2025 😞

Well i screwed up yesterday when sending two different items by Next day Special.......oops charged £2 short for each lol Even the most experienced sellers can get it wrong ........

I read somewhere on eBay that these changes of eBay managed shipping will happen from 15th January 2025
And eBay payment holds will happen from 04th February 2025.
Are these dates certain ?
I am wondering if I can sell a few things BEFORE 15th January 2025 and still be OK under the old eBay system of managing my own postage ?... Or is there a chance I might list something and eBay then suddenly spring their managed shipping thing on me whilst it's still before 15th Jan 2025 ?
I want to sell something just after Christmas & New Year has finished but want to do it BEFORE eBay's new managed shipping rules kick in... and then take everything of mine down on 14th Jan and sit back and watch other sellers and how this all works before committing...
What are your thoughts on this guys ?

You're not the only one who's done this !
I've guessed postage and been caught out many times at the Post Office counter when I've undercharged buyers on very heavy items because my bathroom scales showed a different weight to the Post Office scales lol
I just swallow and pay the difference, as it's my fault, not my buyer's fault !

Not sure what is going on or if anyone else has had this today but i have just had a bid on an item which was £8 and £2 postage. The bid has come through showing no postage at all, and under the awaiting payment section there is a postage one and it says Buyer selected postage service ... and under that Buyer location.. greyed out at the moment. Not sure if this is a glitch or the start of this simple delivery without telling us. Yesterdays sale was normal and i know i selected postage of RM and £2 on the original listing. Any clues anyone????

I've already received a purchase that was stated as being sent via 'Simple Delivery' (aka EVRI). I didn't make any choices whilst paying & wasn't asked to, so not sure if it's already started?
Come the day ebay start trying to charge me extra to buy something I shall be thinking very hard if I wish to continue buying. I gave up selling & closed my selling account when they no longer used PayPal & haven't regretted that move...

Update. Initial panic over, the buyer has now paid and it has included the postage. A part of me will be quite relieved when they bring simple delivery in and i exit, no more messing about, just cart it to the car boot!

Your title reminded me of a song that I've been humming since yesterday. Thanks for that 😀!
In answer to your question in your position i would go (there will be trouble and if you stay it will be double).
i believe the manged shipment will drive allot of private sellers away and make allot of private businesses switch.

Thanks guys for your last two posts,
Knowing eBay, Looks like they have already secretly rolled out managed shipping (simple delivery) by automatically ticking a box somewhere in our seller hub that applies it to all old and new listings 🤔
Whist, it is now probably optional to be able to switch this eBay simple delivery off by faffing around somewhere in your eBay seller hub to find the setting... you can bet your life, come 15th Jan 2025 this option to turn it off will be gone and it will then be a permanent fixture we're stuck with 😞
A little while ago I remember looking at one of my listings just for the sake of it and seeing to my horror that eBay had enabled international shipping when I never ship aboard and always have this option switched off in my eBay settings.
I looked at all my other listings at the time and saw they were all offering international shipping WITHOUT MY KNOWLEDGE AND AGAINST MY WISH - I then managed to turn it off again in my eBay preferences but I asked myself WHY DID EBAY SUDDENLY TURN THIS OPTION ON ? ...WITHOUT INFORMING ME ?? 😧
If they can do this, It makes you wary and wonder what else are they going to suddenly do to us ? 🙄

Could it be THE CLASH - SHOULD I STAY OR SHOULD I GO (1991) ?

Have I completely misunderstood 'Simple delivery?"
I've understood it as; The Buyer pays -separately- for their choice of delivery service from the ones available on the listing of the item they're buying. So the listing will just have the price of the *item* on it?
So, if that's right, 'Simple Delivery' will mean the end of 'free delivery' being included in the price.
There was no difference on the listing form when I put my stuff back up ( with 'free delivery' ticked) after Christmas, so 'simple delivery' can't have started yet...... But if it's going to start in about 2 weeks time, my stuff will still be listed (good 'til cancelled) so what will happen?
Will ebay take off the part of the item price that they think should cover the postage?
Or just leave it alone so I get to keep the postage part of the whole price (which'd be nice 😊)? so the buyer pays more overall...
Or take down every listing and make me put 'em up again *without* free postage?
I know we're all saying 'wait and see', but if everybody does that, who're we going to find out from? 😂

I think eBay will just auto update your listings after the official date of 15th January 2025 that eBay stated in their new 2025 terms and conditions when this managed delivery officially comes into force.
You will probably not get any notification - It will just happen automatically to all private sellers after 15th Jan 2025... and maybe eBay will then force it onto business sellers shortly after... who knows...

It is exactly that song now ill be watching the video ON loop Thanks again 😂

It will be interesting to see how it actually works.
I read it as buyer pays eBay for postage then seller just gets the label to print. (like on vinted)
So yes an end to fee postage for private sellers

@vintique*violet wrote:Yes I think that is something to do with it... I asked myself WHY?
Why are ebay only offering promotion discounts to sellers and not organic buyers...
@vintique*violet there's a simple explanation for this - it helps boost a particular metric that matters to eBay (and their investors) more than overall Gross Merchandise Volume (GMV).
For ~4 years now, current eBay management has been pushing their "enthusiast buyer, focus vertical strategy" (the reason for all the emphasis on sneakers, trading cards, handbags, watches, Motors, etc.) and has been desperately trying to convince investors this strategy is working.
Toward that purpose, eBay has defined "enthusiast buyers" as those who shop on eBay at least 6 times per year, spend at least $800 per year or those who also sell on the site.
The idea was originally cooked up as a way to counter concerns that overall Active Buyer stats had dropped significantly to below Q1 2018 levels.
By designating some segment as "high value enthusiast buyers" and showing growth in that segment due to authentication programs, additional marketing campaigns etc., eBay was able to to spin the story such that while yes, they may be losing some buyers, those were mostly buyers who only shopped very rarely, didn't spend much money etc. and therefor their loss is no big deal because the truly "valuable" buyers are still shopping here and growing.
And that worked, for a while in 2021-2022 when that segment was still growing on eBay with not insignificant help from the larger pandemic ecommerce boom.
But in Q4 2022, the number of "enthusiast buyers" dropped from ~17 Million to ~16 Million - which is where it has stayed since.
Slide from Q3 2024 earnings presentation:
The fact that "enthusiast buyers" has been stagnant for almost 2 years now has started to raise investor concerns that eBay may have gotten all the extra value out of the "focus vertical strategy" that they could and they've hit the wall in terms of growth in that area.
So eBay is under pressure to make that "enthusiast buyer" stat go back up on the Q4 report and very specific discounts that push the buttons to count for that stat are the fastest way to do it - meaning the offer has to be something that will increase the number of repeat purchases, increase spend to at least $800 per year or convert sellers into buyers.
Driving repeat purchases within such a short period of time is the more difficult of the 3 criteria - people who have only bought once or twice through the whole year are going to need a big push to get them to buy 4-5 more times in 3 months, even if that is slightly helped by the holiday gift giving season.
Increasing amount spent is a little easier, but more likely to be targeted at new consumer goods items or electronics refurbished by authorized sellers - and in the US at least I've seen eBay working in conjunction with those kinds of sellers to offer discounts based on pricing tiers that are definitely geared toward getting people to make higher dollar purchases to "save" more.
But that is a double edged sword as investors are also sensitive to heavy discounting as it was a favored tactic of previous eBay leadership that proved to be pretty disastrous for a bunch of reasons I won't get into here because this is already long enough 😂.
So that leaves the last criteria - buyers who also sell - and eBay has apparently found ways to pull that lever to convert some of the new consumer to consumer/private sellers on the platform into buyers, magically increasing the "enthusiast buyer" rate for the next report.
In the US, where Spendable Funds/eBay Balance is not mandatory, they've done it by offering coupons like this:
In the UK where they've mandated eBay Balance for private C2C sellers, it's much simpler - just tie the coupon to using eBay Balance which can only be gained by being a seller and again, magically the number of "enthusiast buyers" goes up.
It's all shell game really but that along with the additional $3B in stock buybacks will probably be enough to keep investors relatively happy for at least another quarter.

Did you happen to change some listings from auction to buy it now, or vice versa? I think that can sometimes tick a box that you had previously un-ticked. I know I've switched some listings, and then realised the 'allow offers' option has reactivated itself... you have to have eyes in the back of your head these days, as eBay is always interfering with something... 😠
