Massive drop in sales

We sell on both the main platforms and mostly they would be level in terms of sales , until a couple of months ago , when ebay sales just fell off a cliff , I had to check that our listings were still there . Has anything bizarre happened ? Anyone else finding the same ?

Re: Massive drop in sales

Probably because most of the genuine private sellers are sick of reading comments like that and seeing every thread turned into a playground for finger pointing business sellers.  Many others aren't even bothering to comment here, just heading for the exits instead.

'Probably because most of the genuine private sellers are sick of reading comments like that and seeing every thread turned into a playground for finger pointing business sellers.  Many others aren't even bothering to comment here, just heading for the exits instead.'

What a load of waffle, again.

How can you possibly speak for 'most of the genuine private sellers'? and know that 'many others aren't even bothering to comment and heading for the exits'.

Just because you don't have an issue with the ones trading on private accounts doesn't mean everyone should. We all have a right to comment on the boards and have our own opinions and if it is very obvious that someone is trading without paying any fees ( as we do) or complying with the law, then we have a right to speak.

Re: Massive drop in sales

Yes, we all do have a right to our opinions, voice them on the boards and have them discussed.

So why do you dismiss my opinion as waffle?

You then go on to give your opinion of my views on "private" sellers running businesses on private accounts.

"Just because you don't have an issue with the ones trading on private accounts doesn't mean everyone should."

I'm on record on many threads acknowledging that it is a serious problem that ebay should be tackling.  Long before these latest restrictions I've said that they are damaging to genuine private sellers and ebay as well as registered business sellers.  I even put forward an idea for a way that ebay could make it more difficult for them, if it wanted to.  Not just as speculative as my comment but also demonstrably wrong, but I wouldn't just dismiss your opinion as waffle.

I fear we may be getting near to what is looked on as an "Off topic inter-personal dispute", so rather than risk the thread being Locked before it's got started this will be my last post.

Re: Massive drop in sales

You made a statement.

I asked the questions:

'How can you possibly speak for 'most of the genuine private sellers'? and know that 'many others aren't even bothering to comment and heading for the exits'.

You chose not to answer them.

Re: Massive drop in sales

I agree, I have been selling on here for 20 years, only things we no longer want, always had a steady flow of sales, not now- no watchers,  no offers - not even getting the views, I have reduced prices, changed wording but nothing is working.

Re: Massive drop in sales

Most of the answers are wrong. If your ebay sales plummet suddenly then it is ebay punishing you, you read that right. ebay will punish sellers and make their listings invisible to many buyers but still be visible to the seller, they will punish sellers and hide their listings even though they charge you insertion fees, punishment includes:
1- You are blocking buyers, even buyers who scammed you, damaged your returns, lied to you, or started fraudulent returns.
2- You are getting multiple returns even it is not your fault, many buyers are inexperienced and order the wrong part then abuse ebay returns and blame it on the seller choosing the wrong type of return to avoid paying return shipping.
3- You decline returns, even on items listed as "No Return Offered", ebay will limit your sales if you decline any return regardless what type of return.
4- You are not responding to buyer's emails, even buyers who go against ebay policy, ebay system will automatically limit your sales if you don't respond to buyer's emails.
5- You delay shipping beyond the dead line post on your sold items.
6- You contact ebay to remove negative feedbacks, even if the feedback left is unfair and was left by a scammer to tried to scam you and you expose him and prevent him from scamming you.
7- You don't participate in promoted listings, ebay wants to make more money out of every seller, they claim they charge sellers 15%, but you actually pay 20% (counting insertion fees, selling fees, monthly store subscription if any).

There are also other reasons that ebay will limit your listing visibility.

Re: Massive drop in sales

On top of all of that is the very obvious practise of "turning sales on and off like a tap". Plenty of people report that they get a cluster of sales and it's like the tap is switched off for a week or more. Then suddenly a cluster of sales will happen again. I experienced it myself with what feels like normal sales happening in fairly quick succession and then nothing for ages. I know some other private sellers and the exact thing happens to them. I have also read this from other people on here and on other sites. So, it's definitely something eBay is doing.

It got to the point where you would know if you had say 3 sales in a day that you wouldn't get anything after that for at least a week, and that is exactly what happened.

Other people report that their tap gets switched on and switched off in ever decreasing volumes, so that over time they get less and less sales.

eBay are literally toying with people. The only question is why? Is it because CEO Jamie Iannone is only interested in "high value buyers", luxury goods and collectibles? If so, quit playing with people and just be honest. If you don't want certain people on your platform, don't waste their time, just say so.

Personally speaking, I stopped selling and buying on here in January. I started being more active on the forum at that point, because it all seemed like something underhanded was going on. It has got worse in the last two months and I now have ZERO trust in this platform. So, I guess it's all working perfectly to plan. I was a "low value buyer" and "low value seller", so not someone Jamie Iannone would want to be anywhere near. Having read so many posts and so much from around the internet on what is going on, I am now satisfied that my decision to walk away from eBay was the right one and that what I believed was happening actually is happening. Also, straight from the CEO himself about what his vision for eBay going forward is and it doesn't include the little people.

First they came for the private sellers...... then they came for the low value business sellers...... Just make sure you're either a "high value buyer" or seller and deal in those collectibles and luxury goods. Otherwise, that cliff is approaching.

I'm annoyed by it all, because none of it is transparent. I've had to find all this out for myself. So, I've wasted a lot of time trying to make my sales work by fiddling with prices, photos, descriptions, etc. When the truth was none of that would make any difference, because the tap was off behind the scenes. Nothing I would do would make any difference until eBay turned the tap back on. As well as doing that, I've had to waste my time in trying to find out if my experience really was my fault or if eBay have been playing games with me behind the scenes. Well, it is clear that is exactly what they do now. So, I washed my hands of eBay in January and I am now going to wash my hands of this forum. Even the forum has a lot of shenanigans going on. So, for me the word eBay is enough to make me walk the other way now. Having come to eBay ot the forum every day for a long time, it is a hard habit to break. I've declared I won't come back here and then I do. It's one of those sticky sites and it is designed that way. So, it isn't easy to just walk away. But now I have satisfied myself about what is going on, there's really no reason for me to be here. Hopefully today is the day I can stop coming here. I don't like the site at all now. It isn't what it was. The "it's free to sell" TV campaign seems to be more of a hollow P.R. exercise now. It's all about the image rather than the reality. Urgh!

Re: Massive drop in sales

Very interesting has to be the worst business model in the world!! Just had
another message from ebay saying they are putting my account below standard
yet again but nothing has changed the three lying sellers defects as ebay
calls it but it's those buyers who are the defects!! So I contacted ebay
customer services and asked them why they sent me a message telling me to
improve when nothing has changed and how I get out of this below standard
loop guess what they said?!?! Use promoted listings 🤔🙄😳😬👎 I said so
you penslise me through no fault of my own you hide my listings but you ask
me to sell more items you charge me 6% extra then if I actually manage to
sell anything and you want me to him give you more money!! The foreign girl
on the phone who was speaking broken English said yes!! I said I dont think
so and your business sense is beyond ridiculous and she put the phone down
on me but to cover her back she called me straight back but put the phone
down again then sent me a message saying that ebay tried to contact me and
I didn't answer also no message with the previous call transcript
🤔🙄😳😬👎 how bloody fraudulent and deceptive they really are anyway no
sales still so I am closing up soon and wrapping in altogether!! Ebay you
have won your the most deceptive fraudulent company I have ever come across
and I have been on ebay 20 years goodbye and good riddens!!

Re: Massive drop in sales

It's a mean game mate. I'm dropping from top rated seller cuz 30 items out of 800 in past year were deemed late by the buyers. These were all £2.99 items the buyer expected tracking and next day. If you look at what u actually get for being a top rated seller and what u have to offer, its really just helping ebays image. Have to use tracking and a 48hr courier.

So... I've decided to play ebays game with them as i feel as vicious as it is, its the only way to win. I've put all the prices of my items up dramatically (£2.99 keyrings are now £4.99) and using promo listings to give ebay a whopping 25% (+ their final value fees of course). It actually on paper works out to be MORE profit for me than before which is kinda shocking. 4 sales last night. Its really quiet right now cuz end of tax year start of spring etc but it was nice to just see SOME money appear. The sad thing is tho this looks like how u need to play and how ebay wants u to play.

I feel guilty massively overcharging for things now but I dont see any way to make this work.

Re: Massive drop in sales

It might be something, it might be nothing.

I received a satisfaction survey from eBay and outlined in a neutral way my increasing disinterest in the platform having seen sales fall from a peak of £1,000 a day to £30 a day. Since I completed that survey sales magically increased, now regularly £200 a day.

Not the peak of a couple of years ago but it never is going since eBay pulled my top three selling products as not being eco friendly enough for them but left me holding big value in frozen out stock; even though the products were not government regulated or phased out products. Probably Blackrock had a word.
