Up until today I understood that the jewellery category was excluded from Simple Delivery. But tonight I tried to list a silver brooch and I am only being offered Simple Delivery - no custom option. I tried on the app and on the desktop. I tried listing from new and Sell Similar. Same result. Got a call back from eBay and was told it's not a glitch, it's that Simple Delivery is now compulsory in some categories of jewellery over £20.00. But the terms & conditions still say it is excluded. Anyone know what's going on, please?

Given your experience, it seems we can trust CS on this one. Many of us have seen supporting eBay Help pages that aren't updated as things change.

It's been extremely well advertised..... Not!
Does seem to be the case though.

Delightfully vague.
Could understand if costume jewellery required it but Fine Jewellery didn't but without more info - not a lot to go on!

'Could understand if costume jewellery required it but Fine Jewellery didn't...'

Indeed.
As gold and silver is *not* covered by S.D. and most *non-costume* jewellery tends to be made of gold or silver, this is a bit odd!

I put some jewellery on a few weeks ago and it went to custom postage just made a revision and it is now gone to simple delivery with no option to opt out to do custom postage

Just had a thought I suppose it would be better on sd if they still pay out if it is lost or damaged would that be the case?

@18catsrfurryfriends Well, they haven't said any different, but then they haven't said anything. I think if it's over £20 then it is appropriate to use SD if you can. Check they have got the size and weight right though, they tend to size up unnecessarily.

Yes checked all the sizes and as usual they have chosen a size that is too small for the item. I would never put jewellery in an envelope with no packing! At least hopefully they will cover it if lost or damaged

I fell foul of this too but naturally assumed they had removed the clause not covering gold/silver etc. but this doesn’t appear to be the case. I only have a couple of silver things listed but was going to add some more valuable, gold and diamond jewellery over the weekend. Think I’ll leave it for the time being and see if the SD T&C’s get updated. I won’t hold my breath….

I just went on chat to an agent to get some clarity on this. I was told……
‘That is for only some certain sub category and if your item was not eligible for it the system would have not listed it with simple delivery. The valuable items which are above the price of £750.00 are not insured in simple delivery. Please know that when you list your item and get simple delivery in it which means your item is eligible and is fully insured other wise you won't be getting the option for it’

I wouldn't believe what ebay CS say on the phone, *without* back up from the T's and C's.
*Especially* in a phone conversation (where there is no written record of what they've said)
C.S. quite often talk a right pile of old cobblers.

My items are just some watches and a silver bracelet.
When i went to revise them it said at the beginning that sd would override the custom postage.
Hopefully nothing will happen if I sell them

Yes, I’d agree with that so I asked for a transcript of the call to be emailed to me so I have it in writing. I will be keeping that safe and hoping I never need it.

I have been relisting and it is the usual dogs dinner of SD selection for jewellery. It doesn't matter if you have entered the weight and the postage you offered before, it likes to select small parcel. Sometimes it recommends Large letter, but selects small parcel. However, under £20 is custom postage, but you have to select it again. Even if it was small parcel before you can select small parcel under custom postage and use Yodel.... for now.

I always like to use small parcel as it gives enough room to do a decent amount of packaging to ensure nothing gets broken, but SD always picks small letter, so you have to be vigilent when doing it.

So is there any update . I’ve sold alot of my mothers Gold jewellery and I mean a lot last year and always used Royal Mail Special Delivery never had any issues of anything being stolen in the postal system and the time I had something go missing was when I sent it via tracked.
Royal Mail state categorically that when sending any precious metal you must use Special Delivery. So I’m not sending valuable items via just a tracked service and now will stop selling any of these type of items on eBay.

Re: Simple delivery of Gold jewellery
Maybe have a look at this thread. One of the Community Team is looking into this issue.

Well I’ve pulled all the jewellery I had for sale.
couch Jewellery will be stolen if eBay just send it tracked. Been there many times which is why I used Royal Mail Special delivery only.
