Is eBay payment processing taking a holiday too?

daro2096

Sold something. eBay tells me the funds will be finished processing on the 26th. Usually it finishes processing the payment by midnight on the day a buyer pays. Why the delay? Or will I get payment tonight as usual?

I don't know why payment processing can take anywhere up to 24 hours. This doesn't happen when you go to the supermarket and buy food. Imagine buying food and they tell you sorry you can't have it for 24 hours.

I don't think that analogy really works.

If you pay for the food in the supermarket with a debit or credit card then the supermarket won't actually receive the payment until 48 hours later.    The same applies for items purchased on eBay with a debit/credit card.

Thankfully the supermarket let's you have the food before it receives actual payment.  Likewise eBay sellers will sometimes receive their payout before eBay receives the actual payment.

Is eBay payment processing taking a holiday too?

But the items were bought on the 24th which last time I checked is not a bank holiday. Are payment processing done manually by an actual person? Did they clock off early on Tuesday?

According to the  info on the "Getting paid for items you've sold page" for sellers on Help&Support ( https://www.ebay.co.uk/help/selling/getting-paid/getting-paid-items-youve-sold?id=4814 ) it, quote, "typically takes 1 day from confirming the buyer’s payment for the sales proceeds to appear as Available for payout", plus - again, quote, "it typically takes 2 days from confirming the buyer’s payment to initiate your payout".

These are however working days, not calendar days, so given that both 25th and 26th December are Bank Holidays even if payment for an item sold on 23rd December was processed with in a "typical" 1 day timeframe (some will take longer) any payout from a seller's eBay balance to their bank account would take a "typical" further 2 days to be processed so may not appear in a bank account until, possibly, Monday 30th (assuming payment is made on the 2nd working day after a transfer request is made).

All the above assumes there hasn't been a failure within eBay's or any given bank's processing systems, and whilst you could check for any disruption to your specific bank's processes I doubt eBay would admit anything if their system was at fault.

All you can do is keep checking.

Is eBay payment processing taking a holiday too?

Am talking about eBay's payment process not the bank. A transfer to my bank is usually within minutes of it happening even at the weekend.

Is eBay payment processing taking a holiday too?

Hello @daro2096  and thanks for raising the subject up.

I am in the same position as you with over 300 pounds under ,,processing status'' plenty of them were supposed to be realeased by 23th December but nothing literally. This is very frustrating especially that most of us ,using the funds for inventory ,postage, etc.

Very bad experience E-bay.

If the buyer isn't getting the item on time ,the feedback and frustration is on us (sellers).
Now because of this slow funds realising I have to pay extra for postage ,just to make sure that the customers are getting the orders as promised by E-bay.

I have called them today and someone was able to raise an ticket for me ,but still no any further update.

Very bad experience for us,as sellers!

In that case it seems fairly obvious that there is (or, if the issue has now been resolved to your satisfaction, at least has been) an issue with eBay's buyer-to-seller payment processing.

Asking questions along the lines of "Why the delay? Or will I get payment tonight as usual?" on these boards is pointless - no-one on here knows. You need to ask eBay directly, but (as you may well know) it is impossible to speak to anyone at eBay and even if it was they won't tell you. The only "advice" you'll get from an eBay employee on these boards will be "clear cache and cookies"

You'll just have to be patient and wait - the payment will be processed when eBay get round to it. Frustrating it may be, but delays in payment processing will be covered in the Ts&Cs which you read/ignored (delete as applicable) when you signed up for Managed Payments.

Is eBay payment processing taking a holiday too?

Its strange as it pays out  + processes instantly at the weekend, exactly as in the week. Also any sales between about 12am and 9am show as processing till later in the day and wont be available to witdrawl till the next day which is understandable, payouts seem to be about 3am.

In other words bank holidays behave differently to the other 347 days or whatever it is.

It may seem strange but it depends on your understanding of how the system processes data...

When the system parses in order to create transfer data for payouts it cannot at the same time process payments from a buyer into a seller's eBay balance as the data being processed for payouts is (or at least should be) locked in an 'exclusive update' mode; a payment processed at the same time may cause a processing imbalance.

That explains why, as you mention, sales between c.12 am and 9am show as processing until later in the day: they're not actually processing all the time (that's just the message which is displayed), the processing is held in a queue and will not commence until the payout processing has completed.

That Bank Holiday processing 'behaves' differently to other days (including weekends) is down to eBay's scheduling, not any given fault in the processing. eBay have, most likely, decided not to run regular payout/payment processing on Bank Holidays. Why? You'd have to ask them, thought I doubt you'll get an answer.

I get that all these delays are frustrating but there have been no announcements regarding any issues (not in itself surprising - the CT are off until the New Year and the site is probably being maintained by a skeleton staff) so the processing delays which are being experienced are either normal for Bank Holidays or the result of an operational error which is not being addressed because everyone's off over Christmas.
