Hi everyone,
I recently encountered an issue with refunding a buyer who returned an item. The buyer paid for both the item and the postage, and I’d like to offer a partial refund (e.g., refund only 80% of the item cost) while keeping the postage cost separate. However, eBay seems to only allow a full refund option in the return details.
I’ve been using www.percentagescalculator.co.uk to work out the exact percentages for refunds, but is there a way to input these custom refund amounts directly on eBay? Or do I need to process the partial refund outside of eBay’s return system?
I’d appreciate any advice from sellers who’ve handled similar situations—thanks in advance!

You need to give a full refund through the return. If you send a partial refund outside of the return, the buyer could still get a full refund through the return on top of the partial refund.

If you have a business account, you have to accept returns and you do have to refund the full amount paid by the buyer, including any postage they originally paid.
Equally, as a private seller, if a buyer returns an item for refund using the Ebay Money Back Guarantee, you have to pay for return postage and refund the entire amount paid by the buyer at the time of purchase.
This is as dictated by Ebay: their site, their rules. You can't use 'custom refund amounts'.
If you offer a partial refund, the deal is that the buyer keeps the item as well as having the refund.
You can't refund outside of the system because all payments from your buyers come to you via Ebay and have to be returned through Ebay.
