Promoted sale

Why should I or any seller have to pay extra to promote an item, when we're paying for a sale anyway. If I list something on a certain date, if a potential buyer is searching on that particular date, surely that item should register at the top of or near  their "Newly listed" preference. When I, as a buyer am searching for an item on a daily basis, "Newly listed" is always my pref, so I expect to see all newly listed goods. It also suggests that my item is being buried, if I don't pay extra to promote.

With the recent changes to General Promotions, many Sellers are also questioning their necessity. You're right, you don't have to promote on eBay to make sales. Especially on items like your most recent sale, where yours is the only one! You're also right with what you've noticed when searching Newly Listed. The top slot is now reserved for Priority Campaign items, but your newest listed will still be up near the top, and not buried.

1 - it makes eBay money. Being a business with shareholders, this is in their interests.

2 - you shop that way. It does not mean everyone does. Many buyers will search, click the first result and buy it. Depending on what you are selling, advertising may be more of a necessity due to competition.
