I am currently the high bidder on an item, it has 17 hours to go before ending, the seller has duplicated the exact listing as a much higher "buy it now" is this allowed, there was no buy it now on the original listing, and my bid would have prevented any "offers" ,so placing another listing for the item undermines my bid.

It's unlikely they have two, but it may be a mistake. You will just have to wait and see what happens with the auction.

yes its impossible in this case to have two, especially as the photos and description and the same in every way, the nature of the item renders this an impossibility, my concern was the seller seeing only my bid on the item has listed the same item as a buy it now for roughly 4-5 times my current bid, if someone buys it now are they allowed to continue with the sale seeing as an original auction is still taking place.

Sellers are not meant to list a single item on two separate listings at the same time, but honestly, ebay don't care. A buyer would be foolish to buy the BIN if they could bid on the auction.

Maybe that's why the seller has done it, to generate bids.
so against ebay rules but they don't care!!!! it's against the rules to put the seller or listing on here,, but I bet I would soon get pulled over for that,,eh!

If there is only one item, then the seller can only sell one.
If in the unlikely event that someone was foolish enough to buy the BIN, seller would have either to cancel the auction which without your agreement would get seller a defect, which can be very damaging to seller, or not honour the sale, which would entitle you to leave negative feedback.
The actions of the seller make no sense to me, and I can only assume it is a mistake, or a sign of a very inexperienced seller who does not understand the risks he is taking.

seller been here since 2013, 100% feedback into 3 figures, so not too much of a novice?
when you mention "mistake" I find it somewhat hard to believe a seller would forget he had already listed the item and there was a current bid on it. but I guess the reason to be it was too late to alter the original to include a buy it now, so this may be a way around that, however I agree someone would have to be stupid to buy it now for 5 times the current bid, but there are plenty of stupid about.

I just noticed the postage has doubled in price too. I suspect this is connected to ebays new money grabbing simple postage sham

OK, so I asked the seller to explain the other buy it now listing on the very same item I had bid on,,
I AM THE CURRENT BIDDER ON THIS ITEM, WHY HAVE YOU COPIED THE EXACT LISTING AND PLACED A HIGHER "BUY IT NOW" PRICE ON IT, YOU CANT SELL THE SAME ITEM TWICE.PLEASE EXPLAIN.
this was the reply,,
Someone has offered me 200 for the chainsaw but they were unable to to bid on the current listing because of the age verification and I was unable to add a buy it now price to the live listing and so I thought to create a new listing. If it is unsold at the buy it now price and you are the highest bidder then you will still win.
I won the auction,
then I responded,,
well I won it fair and square, and I have paid immediately, and I'm retired and answered all ebays requirements regarding age verification.thank you for the explanation, it's irrelevant now but ebay rules state only one listing per item, and they still would need age verification on a buy it now.
It is now on its way to me .
