I recently bought a coin from the US. eBay automatically charged 20% import tax while the correct rate is 5%. I reached out to ask if anyone else had encountered similar problems.
I received the following reply from a member. “I don't think ebay's system can differentiate between different rates of import tax and they won't do a refund. At least I have never seen it happen. Please come back though and tell us if what happens to you.”
I’m not sure how to reply to a reply so I have relaunched the conversation.
Following my detailed response to eBay, where I provided the links of several governmental website pages to substantiate my claim that eBay had used the incorrect harmonised tariff code for importing the item (an 1862 bronze coin), I received a reply that I should only provide one link. This I did and after waiting a few days, solicited eBay for a response who have now replied, I quote “Thank you for your response, and providing this link for us. I have submitted a request to the appropriate internal tax team for review. This team will review the order details and the proof you have provided. As soon as I have an answer from our tax team, I will reach out to you directly to let you know the decision and if a refund will be granted. Please note, this review process can take up to two weeks to complete.”
It’s a step forward but a quick google on the internet would take 5 minutes (perhaps 5 seconds with AI) to reveal that eBay charged me too much tax. Anyway, I live in hope.
