I sent an item to the winning buyer that turned out to be undelivered. I had paid the correct postage price through the Ebay postage page. I automatically refunded the buyer. I would have thought that Ebay would have checked this and refunded me. Lucky it was only a single cheap dvd and nothing expensive. It has put me off selling in the future.

It matters not where you buy your postage from, but it does matter if you have tracking to show delivery.
That is all that matters, if you do, and it does show delivery, then those tracking numberes will close any case the buyer opens for item not received.
If you purchased your label from eBay ( Packlink) it is to Packlink you now place your claim for a refund for item lost in the post .
See here for details how to claim:

If the tracking shows attempted delivery then you didn't have to refund your buyer.
What's the tracking status?

Without tracking you always have to refund buyer if they say not received.
