Item never delivered and returned

Hi

Sold an item on ebay. Used ebay simple delivery, and dispatched it using Evri. Buyer requested it be sent to his local post office. Looks like item never arrived and was marked as damaged by the courier. Now the buyer is (rightfully) complaining he hasnt had his item the item is being returned to me. What do I do here? Buyer hasnt opened a case yet but i have asked him to as now im going to look like i sell dodgy stuff and Evri have broken the item apparently.

Any advice?

You've done everything correctly, you are covered by ebay for any loss or damage.

"You'll be protected if the item is lost or damaged from the point the item is scanned into the carrier's delivery network and until it's marked as delivered"
