I am triying to update a fixed price item by adding further details to the item description but eBay will not let me

It wont let you if theres already a bid on the item or the item has less than 12 hours remaining on the auction - So you may need to close the auction and restart if its info that you feel is important to add

The only fixed price item is the car, which is a classified ad. and cannot be amended. You could end and list again, buy you would then have to pay another fee.
