returned item that didnt fit (no tracking no.)

I bought a light for my MOT on my car that didn't fit and showed the seller with photos and they said to return it. I went to the post office and the lady said to cross out my name and circle the return address and put it in the post box outside, which i immediately did and emailed the seller straight away. He is saying he would check with his returns dept (i don't think he has one) and refuses any more contact. I tried to open a return with ebay but they wanted me to buy a return label which i couldn't do as i was toldby the post office not to do it andby then i didn't have it either. PLEASE HELP! it is nearly £35 which i can bearly afford right now.

EBay provides procedures for returning items, whether they're not as described or just no longer wanted. Both require the use of a tracked delivery service as evidence that the item has been returned.

If you have already returned it youself without any postal tracking there is nothing you can do.

I sort of got the answer I needed but it didnt help me with eBay so I raise the case with PayPal instead and eBay had timed out with my return because I couldn't buy the postage stamp through eBay because I'd circle the Return to Sender part on the actual parcel as told by the lady in the post office and just reposted it in the pillar box outside, as the post office told me to. I had to raise a case with PayPal instead of ebay as they would do nothing which seemed to force the hand of the seller and he refunded me the next day. I had a feeling that he actually had received it and was trying to chance his arm with with saying he haven't received it when he had and not having to pay me back. Nevertheless, I managed to receive full payment back thanks to PayPal certainly not eBay so I'm happy it worked out in the end.
