Wrong item supplied - but I have to pay postage that is almost cost of item?!

As the subject says; the item I was sent is not what was listed - the wrong brand and model numbers are clearly shown on the packaging, although the sellers delivery note shows what I ordered. I sent photo's clearly showing it does not fit but the seller insists it will fit different models and the return postage will cost me almost the cost of the item.  Once again, a seller is making money by sending out wrong items knowing that buyers won't waste more money returning the item.  No wonder I am using ebay less and less, and amazon more... real shame as I'd prefer to support UK businesses.

when a seller sends an item that isn't as described all the buyer has to do is go to the Resolution Centre  and open a not as described case,

the seller is then given 3 days to provide a prepaid returns label

if they don't the buyer returns to the case on day 4 and asks ebay to step in,

the buyer doesn't have to pay the return costs

if on the other hand the buyer makes a mistake and chooses 'doesn't fit' as the reason the seller doesn't have to pay the return costs,

'doesn't fit' is for when the seller sends the correct item but the buyer bought the wrong thing

Well, they sent the wrong item and it didn't fit so I chose 'item does not fit' after the seller insisted it was compatible. I exited the Resolution Centre once it started asking me for money to return the item. Now I am going round in circles because eBay deems me to be satisfied because I have 'closed' the case... an inflexible system that leaves me out of pocket through no fault of my own. Surely eBay could help? Nope! I was told I would need to contact trading standards or the Police! I'm afraid I have had it with eBay. I may still use it for buying from private individuals but there seem to be too many barriers to getting refunds when things don't go well. This experience contrasts wildly with a recent purchase from Amazon where I was refunded the moment the courier picked up a damaged order (using the free postage label printed via Amazon) and the replacement arrived 48 hours later. I would so much prefer to use smaller companies on eBay (hopefully keeping £££ in the UK) but this experience just proves why it's not a good idea. Really is a shame.

you chose the wrong reason, you should have chosen item not as described, so, your mistake, and then instead of contacting ebay and changing the reason, you closed the case, there aren't any barriers to getting a refund, if you chose the correct reason you are refunded as soon as the item is returned at the sellers expense

Should I try PalPal to see if they can help, or should I just chalk his up to a rip-off? If only I could explain to someone at eBay! Chat is useless and there's no way to send an email etc.

Just to keep anyone interested updated, I have contacted PayPal to see if they can help. I felt bad doing it, but I have left -ve feedback in the hope of illiciting a reply from the seller. For the record @pixiesen2012 I DID contact eBay to ask them for help and sent photo's to them, too. Unfortunately the person I chatted with did not seem to understand the situation, and certainly didn't seem interested in helping - I don't think they fully understood and some of the phrases used made absolutely no sense in English (" the reason for that the selected reason is under remorse"). I remember when we could call and speak to someone who could sort out problems 🙂
