Lost buyer contact

Some months before lockdown, I sold an item which was too large to post. The buyer lived some hours away so we agreed a collection when he was next in my area. Obviously they were unable to collect. I now can't find any record of the transaction or emails exchanged. I have tried searching for the item on sold items but the sale was too long ago. I have been waiting for the buyer to contact me but am assuming that they are having the same issue. Any ideas?

It would have helped to know whether they paid? Are you asking what do about refunding them? You could send them a final reminder of say 7 days, after which you will refund them less your selling fees if they still don't collect.

If they didn't pay there's there's nothing to do. It's far too late to report them for not paying, or to claim your fees back. Ditto it's too late for the buyer to use eBay's money back guarantee, and Paypal doesn't cover items sold for collection.
