Contacting a buyer other than through a live listing

Does anyone know how I can contact an ebay member who purchased an item from me over a year ago?  I have his ebay user name from my paypal transaction details but not his email address.  Can I send a message through ebay without doing it through a live order or listing?  Paypal says to contact the buyer log in to your eBay account and go to your selling history but I can't find any selling history, ebay seem to delete it very quickly.

Use advanced search for the userid and then on their profile page contact member

or add their username at the end of this link https://www.ebay.co.uk/fdbk/feedback_profile/

I tried advanced search and it just gives me an option to search for items by seller, bidder, or item number - no user id option that I can see. I have his postal address from Paypal so will drop him a line which is perhaps the best option. Many thanks to anyone offering a solution on this.
