Re: restlessness.....

LOL   I've just been mentioning some uses of Magnesium on the vitamin thread :^O

Its used by just about every bodily process, and its easy to fall short of getting enough unless you eat lots of green leafy veg, nuts, wholegrains.  In short, a typical western processed diet is very low in magnesium and it gets used up apace if you smoke, drink or are stressed or eat a lot of sugar.

Rose, the most typical symptoms of not enough is feeling jittery and oversensitive.  Palpitations (magnesium stopped those for me in under 24 hours some years ago)  being generally irritable, aches and pains.

Magnesium is essential to allow the body to properly use calcium.  It drives me nuts that calcium alone has been prescribed for so long and its only just changing.

That said,  CG, check with the doc before changing as magnesium is contraindicated for anyone with kidney problems and your husband's kidneys could potentially be stressed by his illness and medication - do check first.

Re: restlessness.....

Does anyone know if the Magnesium and Calcium would have an adverse effect on Crohns disease? Will try to research it online but just wondered in the meantime?

Re: restlessness.....

I've received my Magnesium tablets today, so here's hoping they put a stop to my restless legs! I suppose they take a while to get into your system though? Will let you know how I get on wih them.

Re: restlessness.....

I have been taking calcium & magnesium tablets for 2 weeks now, but no improvement to report - if anything my sleeping is worse - but it's early days yet.

Re: restlessness.....

Well, after my first Magnesium tablet with added B vitamins, I can honestly say I had a lousy night and my restless legs seemed even more restless! Early days though, so here's hoping............

Re: restlessness.....

B vits are involved in energy production and taking them at night may counter the relaxing effect of the magnesium, although B6 on its own can improve uptake of magnesium by the body.

Solgar do a calcium/magnesium citrate (citrate is the most easily absorbed form).  Experiment - you may be better off taking it with your evening meal rather than right before bed.

Re: restlessness.....

I agree with Elphaba wholeheartedly.  Vit B should only be taken in the morning.  Magnesium in the evening.  The two would work against each other if taken at the wrong time.  I only discovered the best time to take vitamins recently on the BBC website.  Makes total sense as they have different effects on the body.

I can only recommend the supplement that I was taking as it worked so well for me Mag/calcium (Holland Barratt).  It also works brilliantly for my friend who has cancer.  His wife demands he takes the supplement so she can get a good nights sleep too.  It is the only thing that has worked for his restless legs.
