This business of "tea" as an afternoon meal, puzzled me, when as a child, I read Rupert Brooke's famous lines:
"Stands the church clock at ten to three
And is there honey still for tea"
The stated time of "ten to three", caused me for years to consider, and ponder, the chronological aspects of taking "tea", at 2.50pm. Such an early time seemed inherently implausible. Though, in a strange way, it was appealing. It had an allure. Why? I don't know. But I was almost reconciled to it.
Before realising, in later years, the obvious - that it was merely a forecast of "tea-time". Not a specification for when the event actually occurs!
I suppose this might be an example of how childhood thoughts, often have a naive literality.
