Just wondering if there are any of you out there who have done any new job training in middle age or anyone who has learnt a new skill or hobby? When i say job training i really mean gone into an entirely different field of working than they previously did at a later age. I know i had a friend who learnt to drive when she was in her fifties and i thought this was most commendable. Maybe some of you go to night school or adult education?. I want to do something but do not know what to pick?. Any late learning tales?.

After years of using a moped to get me about I passed my driving test at the age of 48 - and really wished I had learnt years before.
Also being on JSA I have been on a training scheme by the Job Centre (and I had to do this to continue claiming JSA) to obtain Maths and English exams. Unfortunately although I had O levels in these two, over the years the results have got lost and because I was unable to prove my skills I had to re-sit four exams - two in English and two in maths so it was like going back to school. Although I enjoyed going it was, in my opinion, an insult to my intelligence as I have been a legal secretary/proof reader for 30 years where maths and english are absolutely essential. However now I have passed these exams I have to go no longer. These things are about the only thing I can class as "late learning". I was 36 when I had my only child - if that counts LOL

I went on a computer course when I was 52, having got my first computer then; also, learnt to swim when I was 56.

I started a new job at 49, using computers, love it now, was a total luddite before, only marginally better now according to the old man.
Go for it.

Both Hubby and I have learnt to look after hedgehogs. I have even learnt to give injections if the need arises. I think we are always learning here. Especially with the way technology keeps changing. We have yet to learn how to use a smart phone though. LOL

I'm over 50 and In November I start Training to be Forest School instructor.. ( apparantly the course is the equivelent work to an A level). At the same time my OH ( also over 50) is doing NVQ3 amenity horticulture and my 13 yr old son is doing 2 gcse a year early...
think we might end up hurting each other!!! ( and I might just have to buy a printer too)

I changed careers at the age of 53, totally different type of work in a completely different field, so it was huge learing curve.
I'm doing an online degree level course in Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences from MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) and the next on the list is to learn Russian.
You are never to old to learn, it all depends on motivation and attitude.
