Just had one turn up on the doorstep after following a child down the road. It is very affectionate and just wants to be cuddled. so obviously somebody's spoilt pet.
It is also thin, coat is dull and coarse and it was very grateful for a smidgeon of food.
Any ideas what we need to do?
Going out for the day and will put out in back garden and see if it is still there later but realised that we have no idea who to contact to put cat back in touch with owners.

Your local radio station might be able to help by putting out a broasdcast. I think ours sometimes do that.

if you could leave some food and water out that would help until owner turns up
it might be a stray kitten thats knackerd due to heat and lack of food

It's obviously not that spoilt if it's thin and the coat is dull. Is it it eldery do you think? There will be cat rescue centres somewhere local to you. Owners may have contacted them. It may well have just 'left home'. My current cat did that and although the owner came to get him back he refused to go and has been with me for several years now. (other cat tolerated him) You could put a notice on the lamp posts or card in local shop window. If you're prepared to adopt him/her (early days yet of course) give him something to eat. Is there somewhere in your garden where he can shelter if it rains? He may just be lost/wandered off. - maybe owners have moved and he's disorientated. There should also be an Animal Warden at the local Council. On the other hand, he may just be the type of cat who wanders into people's garden/house for a change of scenery! My very spoilt cat used to go into a neighbours ( quite some way) through the back door, said 'hello' and out through the front door. I knew nothing about it until neighbour saw me with cat and told me.

i would contact the nearest animal centre. Try to keep it calm and not get it stressed although it sounds laid back!!. He or she may have a chip inserted that a vets could read to see where it comes from. awww cats are lovely. keep us updated?.

Been out all day. Oh & son went out in the garden - no cat
I went out to water pots and lo and behold it's on the shed roof. Followed me in and out like a little yo-yo. It has definitely adopted us but a lady in a shop says one of her customers was looking for her cat yesterday.
This one is definitely wanting to be here. It is sitting on patio wondering why it is out and we are in. OH has made it a little box house with water and some food. Big softy.
Now last cat that adopted us was the laid back one. Was on doorstep every morning, slipped in at 1st opportunity and went to sleep on a chair, furthest it moved all day was to another chair, then we'd carry it home in the evening(cos it'd beat us back if we didn't)..

Cats can adopt other houses and owners very quickly. I know people say do not feed them and i got into a bit of embarassment once as i was doing this with a cat who lived about 6 doors away umm. In my first home i used to live in a factory yard. they demolished the place and i used to sit on my front door step. Gradually these cats used to come from houses i think up the road and some would get in my house. After a while when i used to go out and just call a little about six cats would come bounding down walls and across rubble to see me. I gave them names and everything . naughty really. I love cats so much and they seem to come to me and be at ease. awww.
. I miss them actually .

We have two cats both came from elsewhere unloved and not cared for, I also feed next doors two cats even though they are loved and cared for lol. Cats tend to they go wherever the goings good.
If this ones not very well looked after then perhaps he has decided to adopt you. If he sticks around perhaps put a couple of posters up or notes through letter boxes.

A young cat turned up in our garden once. We didn't feed her because we didn't want to encourage her and she was surviving on whatever she could catch, and was getting thinner and thinner, but she made no attempt to leave. When the weather turned cold and wet I made a rough shelter, and she went in there often. Eventually, after 7 or 8 weeks I gave in and brought her into the house for a good feed. She stayed 13 years, untill we had to have her put to sleep last year due to thyroid and kidney problems. She was the best little friend we could ever have had, and repaid us a thousand times over.
