What happened to eBay?

I have been an eBay member for 23yrs almost since the beginning, I have to say that over the last few years eBay is certainly not what it used to be. I have sold a few items but gave that up due to fee's both for eBay & PayPal constantly increasing year after year it seems like.

My main issue is seller's not all sellers before I get jumped on lol, but there are more than a fair share of bad & dishonest sellers on eBay now days. Some with feedback as low as 60% with thousands of sales, why does eBay (apart from making money!) continue to allow sellers this poor to trade on eBay all it does is make buyers react the same way as myself, I must say that I don't buy anything unless I check two things firstly the obvious one their feedback, secondly who they use to ship their items with in the UK, I avoid Evri like the plague I would never purchase from a seller who uses this company & some other couriers the amount of items I have had left in my garden that have been stolen is crazy, I sometimes ask the seller who they use if they do not list the company or I move on to the next seller.

A couple of examples I brought a "New" battery for my Samsung phone or so the item was listed as, unfortunately after I paid for the battery to be fitted it does not hold a charge & is in worse condition than the five year old battery it was replacing?

Another example I purchased a eBay guaranteed refurbished hoover, nothing like the pictures or eBay's refurbished guarantee says it should be. The item was bashed up, scratched & not in the best condition it looked like someone had picked it up from the local rubbish tip. I was very shocked by this as it was the first refurbished item I had ever brought from eBay & definitely the last.

I could go on for at least a dozen items I have purchased over the last year but I won't bore you all with details, I used to spend more time at my local post office returning items than I do anywhere else, I hope you get what mean about poor & dishonest sellers on eBay in 2024. I hate to think how many thousands of pounds I have spend with eBay in 23yrs some worth the money others definitely not!

Thankfully I have now promised myself that I will not buy anything from eBay unless I cannot find it anywhere else, I don't even mind paying extra somewhere other then eBay after my horrible experience's that cause stress & problems, life is hard enough as it is without having all this extra grief.

Such a shame I used to love buying on eBay & it's safe to say I am not the only buyer who now feels the same way as I do I have read enough posts on here to realise that, I have made complaints to eBay but they take no notice, I am a bullion collector gold & silver bars, I see fakes all the time for sale on eBay same ones you can buy on Alibaba & the other knock-off websites all gold & silver plated etc but selling on eBay as solid gold & silver, I have reported these sellers many times & it even says in their feedback the bullion is fake from their buyers, yet they are still allowed to sell their fake gold & silver for thousands of pounds when it's worth £20?

eBay promises you the world when you can actually speak with someone now days, but it's all empty promises they tell you what you want to hear & do nothing, anyway that's the end of my post if you feel the same way I do or have had similar experience I would love to hear about them!

What happened to eBay?

Yes, I also think Ebay has been going steadily downhill over the past few years, although perhaps it is only those of us who remember what it was like in the early days, who can see how things have deteriorated!

I particularly dislike the constant fiddling around with the design & functionality of the site. It seems every other week, something has been altered or messed about with. Useful features have been taken away, or made harder to find, usually involving much more scrolling & clicking.

Like yourself, I used to enjoy buying on Ebay, and used to rate them a 9 or 10/10 when asked if I'd recommend buying/selling on Ebay to friends & family. I would only rate them about 4 or 5 these days.

The site was a lot more user-friendly, and it looked nice, too. Unfortunately, what with so many sponsored & recommended items crammed in everywhere, it just looks a mess now. It certainly takes a lot longer to find things - by the time I get past all the sponsored stuff, & filter out the outside UK sellers, & the confusing '99p' multi-listings, & the sellers with too much negative feedback, I feel too tired & frustrated to go on!

So many times on the Community pages I've seen the phrase, 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it', but it seems Ebay have just continued to tinker about until it is pretty much 'broke'. Sadly, they must have alienated a lot of their original buyers & sellers, who, like yourself, mostly shop or sell elsewhere now.

What happened to eBay?

There are certain sorts of items that I won't buy on Ebay anymore for sure. I also try to avoid items from outside the UK, but still get caught out due to the amount of time it takes these days to find an item in the first place.

I don't think it's just on Ebay though , it seems almost everywhere/everything is broken, or on it's way to being so...

You are so right I joined in 2003 and I think,  just like you, unless I cant find an item elsewhere I will no longer use ebay.  Ebay Customer services is a complete joke, non exitstent and possibly just off shore home workers, employed to send out pre-scripted responses to any query. They always promise you a solultion, that will never materialise, then they send an email to ask "how did we do"? I enjoy replying to those 😏

I used to buy and sell on ebay and my wife has 100% feedback of 3000 plus. Buyer protection used to give you confidence in purchasing, based on feedback and your own judgement and trust in ebay. Between couriers and ebay its now a lottery whether you get a purchased item either in the condition and quality advertised, or at all.  A sad sign of the times I suppose, but a real shame. Ebay dont care, as they have changed to the point that if they turn a blind eye, so what!. Its no loss to ebay but I will just have to purchase items differently and reduce the risks of being conned or dissapointed by shopping elsewhere.

I agree, certainly with regard to online shopping. A lot of sites are selling exactly the same cheap, 'marketplace' items, and even the brands that were always thought of as good quality are not as well made, or reliable as they used to be. I find myself saying the same things my parents used to say, so maybe I've just reached that age where everything seemed better in 'the good old days'...

At least there was no AI back then... I try to avoid buying items on Ebay that only have AI descriptions. I know it must make life easier for those who struggle with writing descriptions for whatever reason, but a short, genuine description, particularly for second-hand items, is so much better than that absolutely useless nonsense produced by AI.  'Add a touch of elegance' apparently applies to everything, from tea-towels to corn plasters!

What happened to eBay?

It has become very samey, I agree, part of the reason I buy a lot of used or older items.

There is an interesting poster on the business board sometimes who really seems to investigate in depth & after researching it now uses AI, but not without their own input.

Apparently it picks out the all important key search words , so useful for sellers it would seem, but needs to be checked before going live IMO.

Most don't seem to so as you write, it's very easy to identify a listing where the seller has just let AI write it... I'm going to search 'corn plaster' now as I could do with a laugh.

What happened to eBay?

That's a hard one as I have 98.4% sellers rate, got 174 good reviews and 2 bad due to courier but gave the customer a refund and they got the item free but now I am a below average seller so pay more fees and can't promote and have to fight against private sellers that pay no fees and if I sell something  for £120 amd cost me £85  I make -36p so zero profit

Hear Hear. Well said Steve. I'm finding ebay to be little other than a Chinese Theft Fest now. You report fake and misrepresented items and the listings stay up to upset the next stream of poor suckers. It's a joke. They really need to think about policing better before we all walk away as I am right now. I've had enough of the disappointment and the hassle. Bang on with Evri too - The most awful bunch of avoiding contact, leaving parcels to be stolen, sheisters. What a joke - You complain and complain and the same joker keeps leaving your parcels in the same ridiculous location - front step - 5m from public footpath - no fence, no gate - just right there, in plain sight. Genius. He once marked this spot 'secure rear door'.
