About time ebay (and other selling platforms) put an end to sellers listing items with "stock photos"...the seller should have to provide an actual photo of the item they are selling & not be allowed to get away with the "image is for illustrative purposes" excuse.

This would never work.
The resources alone of checking every listing for this infringement make it a moot point by itself.
Besides, photos, and even descriptions, are guides only.
I’ve been fooled by photos and descriptions many times. Photos sometimes make defects appear where there aren’t any, sometimes they are shot to hide defects (on purpose or not).
I try and be accurate and honest with my listings for two reasons: 1) I don’t want to waste my time & money on returns, and 2) I don’t want to upset people just to make a few quid. Many sellers don’t feel the same – for whatever reason – and that’s their choice. I highly doubt anything will change that, except if that seller learns the hard way, via having to give lots of refunds. As a buyer you have to also learn that the hard way. Although with eBay’s (newer) buyer protections, most of the time you just lose your time, not your money.

I entirely agree.
However, we all know that Ebay won't do anything so just have to make our own choices when we buy.
I would never buy anything that only had stock photos or had one photo of the actual item and then a load of 'found' photos.
