Simple Delivery and letters - clarification needed please

Is an £4.85 item today going to cost £7.61 soon?

An item that is for sale today at £4 + 85p P&P, next week will cost me an additional 91p (or is the % charged on P&P as well?) for buyer fees from the 4th.

I’ve heard that Simple Delivery is going to become compulsory, and that only tracked services will be used. Can someone confirm?

If so, then the £4.85 item now, will cost £4 + £2.70 P&P + 91p (or even £1.19) fees. So at least £7.61! Surely that can’t be right?

P.s. I know this relates to Private sellers only.

You are quite right. They do want low price items as they make buyer protection on every one. Now they want sellers to pay 2.70 minimum postage so they can make commission on that as well.Whats good about that?Sent from my Galaxy

I have an update on the situation. I placed a request with eBay asking what will happen. I go the following official response from eBay Customer Service:

“sellers who sell low weight items and if items's weight is less than 100g and priced below £10—are exempt from Simple Delivery so that the good thing is that you are selling most of your items that is below GBP10.00 so you can ship item from Royal mail 2nd Class courier service and you do not need to use Simple Delivery.”

This is good news for me – and for my buyers!

Yup... a minimum of £2.70...

I offer free 2nd class large letter shipping on a 30gram £6 listing which currently costs me £1.55...

From mid April Ebay will make their "Simple Delivery" mandatory and will increase my shipping costs to the point of it no longer being worthwhile and will therefore be deleting almost 900 listings..... it was great while it lasted but such is life...... Au Revoir Ebay...

You could easily get rid of these problems by trading on the correct account.

£1100 per year.... I don't think its worth it...  apparently nor do ebay according to my yearly report.

If you read through this thread (or lots of other threads) you will see that SD will not be mandatory for items selling for under £10 and weighing less than 100g.

So, for the items you cite, you will not have to use Simple Delivery.

All's well that ends weel - maybe.

Today, in a departure from the post 4th April norm, I actually had to deal with a successful auction bid!!

I received the normal email which showed the bid value, the BPF of £1.01 and showed a postage charge of £3.00 (instead of the £1.00 p&p shown in my listing).  I checked the order details and it showed the item price the BPF of £1.01 but no postage costs.  The buyer paid.  I checked out the invoice and that showed the item price, BPF of 1.21 and postage costs of 87p (2nd class Royal Mail, selected by Buyer.

I now wait on tenterhooks to see what I actually receive - and when!

I believe it is under £10 OR less than 100gms not “and” so if you have an item costing less than £10 but weighing more than 100gms you will have to use EBay’s Simple Delivery

It is my understanding it is 'and', both parts have to be met

I think you have contradicted yourself there!

As stated it has to meet both criteria to be exempt from Simple Delivery.

If they hadn't scrapped fees none of this would have happened but I think they were forced to because of places like  Facebook marketplace which is free to sell.

I'm afraid the only solution is to become a buisness seller although listings there are 30p each or nearly £30 per month if you want some free listings. I cannot imagine many casual sellers paying that & 30p for a cheap listing just isn't worth it especially with the new ebay SP fee that buyers pay on top.

No there is no combined delivery with this stupid simple delivery unless the letters are less than 100g because many of my items are still set at the old postage price
