Someone requested return to sender on an item I ordered

Hi there, I hope somone can help me

A week ago I purchased an item and it was dispatched to me via Hermes along with a tracking number.

I have been checking and yesturday it was delayed by 24 hours then today it says I have requested it be returned to sender!

I have not made that request what so ever , I have contacted the seller and haven't heard back yet. I am worried this is some sort of scam or something. 

Can anyone tell me if the seller is able to request the item be returned to them before its delivery to me?

If it wasnt them , who would it be?

My payment was made immediatly via paypal and I have double check there are no issues on myside.

Its a nightmare to try and get any customer support on Hermes so I hope somone might be able to shed some light or what I should do next?

I would have thought it was difficult to get any Courier to sort out and item already in course of delivery. In theory there is nothing to worry about as if you don't receive anything thennyou simply open a Not Received case to get a refund. Unfortunately Hermes as you have found can be a problem and their Drivers "deliver" things which are never seen again.  Ebay rely on tracked delivery to determine whether you get a refund and from what we see on here there must be many buyers who lose out.

Morning John , thank you very much for taking the time to reply it’s really appreciated. Yes I did think it would be a bit of a stretch to cancel a delivery mid flow . Eventually the seller got back to me and it was news to them as well . They later messaged me and told me one of their relatives actually work for Hermes and was able to check in on it’s status on their system . They say that on the system it shows that someone refused the delivery at 11:52 am . ( no one refused , no one even knocked on the door ) They took my phone number to update the delivery notes so that the courier would have no excuse not to deliver .

To be honest I don’t know what to believe , what are the chances that one of their relatives happens to work for Hermes ?? Alarm bells are ringing it just doesn’t feel right. I made contact with eBay and explained what was happening and my concern that if the tracking shows that I myself refused the delivery it would mean that I would unable to claim my money back . I will have to wait and see, I would have hoped that my years of positive feedback on my account would help in establishing that I am telling the truth !
