Did you know the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau (NFIB) defines weak and same passwords as a key enabler for cybercrime? Or that in August 2023, the number of cybercrime reports submitted to the NFIB rose by 57% compared to August 2022?

Staying safe online is important all year round. But every October, when the world marks Cybersecurity Awareness Month, is the perfect excuse to scrutinise your online security and embrace best practices in your business.

Here are three simple steps you can take to keep your personal data safe and make your eBay account more secure:

1. Enable 2 Step Verification

Once you've switched on 2 Step Verification, each time you sign into your account you'll be able to confirm your identity via an eBay app push notification, or by entering a code we send you by SMS. Here's how to add 2 Step Verification on the eBay app:

  1. Download the latest version of the eBay app.
  2. Sign in to your account.
  3. Go to My eBay and tap Settings.
  4. Go to Sign in and security and then choose 2 Step Verification.
  5. Tap Turn on beside Use the eBay app.

2. Watch out for phishing emails

We will never ask you for your password or financial information. If you receive a suspicious request for your password or other sensitive information, don’t reply, click on any links in the email or open any attachments.

Top tip: The easiest way to identify whether an email is from us is to check your eBay Messages. If we sent the message, a copy of it will appear there, too.

3. Report any strange activity

Whenever there is suspicious activity related to your account, it's important to act quickly. If you think your account might have been compromised, first check if anyone with access to your account made changes to it, or used it to either buy or sell.

Top tip: If you believe your eBay account has been compromised, we recommend changing the password on your personal email account as well. Your email account password should be different from your eBay password.
