Seller not allowed to give postcode to buyer until after sale - impossible to buy collection item

I'm really fed up. I had a mattress for sale and my listing said that I was happy to send by courier if the buyer organises it. Someone messaged me and asked for my address - I guess so they could check the price of a courier. I answered giving my address. They never bought it. I had no other interest so several weeks later I ended the listing thinking I would make a better listing when I had time.

I then received a warning message from Ebay about doing deals outside of Ebay. I went on chat and was warned that I must never give my address. Fine, I won't do that again.

But what doesn't make sense is that I was also told that I must never give any part of my address - not even my postcode! Not until after someone buys. That is so irrational.

I live in London. When looking at collection listings - the address details only say London. London is huge! Most Londoners including myself don't drive. If I want to buy a collection item on Ebay I always ask for the postcode BEFORE buying. Am I not allowed to do that now?

I can no longer buy collection items if that is the case. It also makes selling a collection item like a mattress hard. Why would someone buy it if I can't answer any questions as to where it is other than the unhelpfully vague 'London'.

You choose your location as London. You cannot give precise address,but I am sure you could make your Location (as I have) London Borough of XXXXXX .That gives a better indication of where you are located. Otherwise you can use a place such as Walthamstow or whatever.

Location is very flexible look at what others do.

It is not a good idea to allow a buyer to organise a courier, in theory you want collection in person and payment in cash, or you organise the Courier, but that may mean you have topack,and that is on of the main reasons sellers choose collection, to avoid having to pack.

If buyer arranges Courier they lose all buyer protection, that is fine for the seller, but you might still have problems if buyer opened a case for damage (caused by Courier). Ebay is quite good at forgetting its own rules and you have to be aware of what the correct position is. if yo have to argue your case.

It's the most ridiculous rule of all time that a private seller cannot supply full contact details before a purchase.

A business seller is required to plaster his full contact detail on every listing.

I have a similar problem. I listed a used toy box as collect in person cash on collection but buyer could only pay by paypal so as it was a cash on collection item couldn't get my address to collect. I lost that buyer because Ebay were so scared of losing £8.50. Why do they make it so hard for a private seller to sell large items as collect in person cash on collection.
