Can I reject the original successful bid and accept the later offer?

No you can't.

After all, they bid according to the rules and surely are then entitled to have the item.

Correct, you have to go through with the sale.

Hello. I listed an item for auction. The auction ended, the item sold and payment was made. I then received a message from someone who had tried to bid, but had a problem so was not successful. They have offered a much, much, higher amount for the item.

Can I reject the original successful bid and accept the later offer? And what would I say to the successful bidder? After all, they bid according to the rules and surely are then entitled to have the item.

Please advise!

Unless you want to get negative feedback & upset your buyer, then you have to honour the winning bid.

Some people will say anything to get you to sell to them.

on top of it being the wrong thing to do, you could end up being suspended for doing an off ebay deal, because if you cancel the sale already made, unless you actually relist it at the higher offer, your going to have to start exchanging details wih the other buyer to sell to them and ebay will see what your doing. if you relist at the higher offer for the other buyer, you`ll just end up paying even more fees and won`t gain much more in the end.
The right thing to do is honour the current sale, as pointed out, how would you like it if you bought something and the seller did it to you 🙂

I'm amazed that you're even considering this. Apart from the fact that such an action would be a breach Ebay rules, and would guarantee you deserved negative feedback and trashed ratings (and a possible permanent selling suspension), it would be illegal. The winning bidder could successfully sue you for breach of contract.

@janeeh4468
