East River String Band

Finally, after a very busy week or two, a chance to visit the forum and to post a recently received T.T.M.

I contacted Eden Bee and John Heneghen of the East River String Band via the Jalopy Theatre in Brooklyn and received a reply from them.

The East river Sting Band play blues, old time and "hokum" music from the 1920's, 30's and 40's. They are great fun and at their best when playing with the likes of Jeron "Blind Boy" Paxton, Ari Eisinger and Dom Flemmons.

Dom, referred to in the note, plays guitar, banjo and bones with the "Carolina Chocolate Drops", a wonderful old time group -- well worth watching just for Rihannon Giddens' dancing.

Pat Conte is a superb guitarist and fiddle player and "Crumb" is an artist and mandolin player who plays with the "Cheap Suite Serenaders" and occasionally with the East River String Band. The artwork copies that were very kindly enclosed by Eden and John are by Crumb.

Eden plays a resonated ukulele and guitar. Her ukulele has a bell brass body and was made by National Guitars and her guitar is a lovely late 1930s Stella, with a pearloid fretboard ( pearloid is known in guitar collecting circles as "M.O.T." -- mother of toilet seat ).

John plays several guitars and is pictured with his early 1930's decal decorated Stella. The other, oddly shaped, guitar he is pictured with is a 1930's Kay Kraft, a wonderful instrument that had features far ahead of its time.

I still seem to be having trouble uploading photographs and have set up an album "Blues /Old Time " which hopefully, will allow you to see the signed photographs and note from Eden and John.
