Autograph Authentication Course

Hi guys

Attended a AFTAL Authentication course yesterday in London for Dealers, led by Garry King, Autografica. Most interesting
Lots of work done on forgeries, fakes, secretarials, autopens etc etc
What was abundently clear was that none of us new it all, and in some signature studies, some very surprising results came up
If I get the chance and time, I will share some of the information with you if you think this will be of use

I think a course of this nature would be great to anyone who is an avid collector and especially for anyone who spends seroius amounts of money
I will happily discuss how Garry views this course - the course yesterday was the first of it's kind and is being repeated today - it was attended by 18 Registered Dealers yesterday and by a similiar amount today

I think the first point to remember and think about an autograph is this - unless it is 'in person', and this point is of particular importance if your buying without actually seeing the item in front of you is 'how do you know this item is genuine' - what sort of provenance is there. Provenance is not everything, as a good forger will have a 'story' to go with the signature - do not be led by the 'story' or 'provenance'; you must concentrate on the signature. What we were all advised was to use a when looking at an autograph was to use a good quality magnifying glass as this can tell you alot about a signature. What we all were amazed by yesterday when we looked at 20 different signatures were the number that were 'secretarial', 'autopen', 'printed' or 'forged' - many of these looked 100% spot on to the naked eye and we were dealers with some knowledge in the field, but under the magnifying glass, flaws could be seen, so my first tip:
1. Buy a good quality magnifying glass (x7 recommended)

I am pleased that the day was of use to you, and i am very pleased to hear your comments etc.

18 incidently is the maximum number i want to do at these events, as it keeps everything just nice. Everyone had the chance to talk to one another, and i knwow that some also did a litle bit of business as well.

As you said the course was aimed at dealers rather than collectors, although we did have one collector on the Saturday.

I certainly learned a lot about doing suc a presentation, and how to make it a lot better next time. These two days were realy a chance to give it a try and see if it works, fortunatly it did!

I have already started to re write some of the parts and will also be introducing more practicle work. The hard part for me was knowing if what i hadput down on paper and in my head, would actually take us through to 4.30 which was my advertised end time, and as you can now confirm, we finished spot on 4.30!

So now i know what i can get into the day, i can make changes to improve it.

I can now confirm that i will be running more of these courses in the new year, both for dealers and a slightly different one or collectors.

Where i have them will be up to you, so i need you, if you are seriously interested, to contact me directly, not via this forum or eBay, and let me nwo you are interested, were you live etc.

Dealer course wil remain at £99 but the collector course will be less. This perhaps sounds a lot, but i know that you will save this any times over, and probably in a short time as well.

Although its fine seeng some of what is seen and heard on the course here, its not the same as being there and being able to see the fakes etc first hand, so plase don't think that a few second hand tips on here will teach you all you need to know!
