I would never expect everyone to give a long winded reply to every post, that is not practical or possible. I do however ask people to consider how they reply, and if they need to reply, as time IS important. I will be blunt, when I see people reply to my posts with "well done", or other two word replies, I honestly think - why did you bother!

My primary reasons for posting are to show someone is signing (or not), share a scan for visual confirmation (useful for authenticity checks and/or for visual comparison), share information, and sometimes just to have a ramble as I like writing. 🙂 Occasionally I like to give a gift or have some fun with a competiton, and if I enjoy a post or have a point to get across will post accordingly. Interaction is key, but only if there is substance to it. I don't need a pat on the back or encouragement. If someone has something interesting to add to the thread, or has a question, or queries authenticity, etc, then that is fascinating, and it is great to see. If no-one cares about my posts, that is ok also. 🙂

I have caught myself giving some replies lacking substance on occasion, and berated myself. It is not fair to the thread originators who deserve more respect.

I certainly do not subscribe to the argument that people need encouragement to send more requests out. We all hopefully take part in this great hobby because we enjoy it, so I do not see why anyone enjoying their hobby would need encouragement? Help yes, but not encouragement - two different things. We all need help in this hobby, no matter how many years we have been doing it.

If a thread gets 60 looks and between 10 to 15 replies, you will probably find it is the same 10 to 15 people causing the thread count to go that high, not really lurkers. The view count goes up every time we look, so if you look at the thread four times, you add 4 to the count. I would estimate that most of us look at many threads at least 4 times, possibly more in some cases. It is linked to this that I find the two word replies frustrating as I will check a thread to see what is being said if I see the reply count increment, but get dismayed as I am looking for info or discussion, and only find a "well done", or similar. When you are short on time, or on a mobile device, this really is frustrating!

I do not mind admitting I am dismayed by the replies to this thread as interesting as they are, and I do thank every one who has replied. It is good to see the viewpoints, even if I do not agree with them. I have told Daz more than once that I am different to everyone else on this forum and that I do not fit in, but he tells me otherwise, so I have continued posting. I think this thread proves my case.

Friday Morning Grumpy Old Man post

Call me grumpy, revolutionary, mad or whatever you want (I don't care - I'm thick skinned :-)), but why not only post a reply to a thread if you have something genuinely of interest to say? 😮

I do not post my successes because I want everyone to say "well done" to everything I get. I do it in the hope that it may be of interest or useful to at least one member, but if not, no biggie. Let's face it, it's not too hard to get replies from small part Doctor Who cast members and former Watford players. 🙂 Yes, if someone gets a cracking reply from someone who is genuinely tough to get and there is genuine "WOW!" factor, common sense dictates a "well done" would not be out of place, but not for every post!

The advantage of this revolutionary approach to posting is that it is genuinely easier to see when a post has updates, you will not have to wade through the spam to find the real content, and you will not see people miss genuinely important content such as on the Colin Firth post. The info about secretarials would have stood out more, and you would have less chance of people saying "well done" without seeing why it was not quite "well done".

Hands up who only reads the first post, and skips the rest as it looks like too much hassle to wade through a mass of replies especially when there is a lot of replies or you are busy?

Feet up if you feel obliged to say something in reply to every post whether you want to or not?

Quality of posts is far more important than quantity of posts.

blah blah - grump out of my system. ]:)

Ha ha Nigel you should have slept in a little longer love you may have got up in a better mood 🙂

Sorry I am one of those who posts well done! I'm guillty!

Hang me! Ban me! shoot me!

I do want to answer ever post as I feel that person has done well in receiving their reply back as we all know it's not always that simple :).... I do read everyones replies and from reading them I do get the jist wether it's a good reply or not and adjust my reply accordingly. Sometimes I dont know what to put if I haven't a clue who/what they are and thats most of the time to be honest 😞 ...I am taking things in and I do sometimes now request other autographs or Dr Who and many many other areas I haven't a clue in fact most of the requests that members post.....sorry! hence the well done! 🙂

Oh and I think most members on here are thick skinned also so dont care 🙂

In fairness Jane, it is more than clear that you do read posts, and reply appropriately with substance that makes reading the replies interesting and worthwhile; I respect that. It is rare to see you just post "well done" or "great success", etc.

I try to read all posts and try to comment on all even if it is 'well done'. If you have taken the trouble to post why shouldn't a member comment well done or something else.

Or should we just 'lurk'?

I think if you comment you are at least you taking part in the group. My knowledge is limited in this hobby to football and rugby league and I learn something new everyday.

I understand your point of view however sometimes a simple well done will get you writing again and again which is good for our hobby I believe.

And we all need to write more so my Royal Pension fund increases 😄

Thank you Nigel I do try....but it is difficult when your not into that subject and no nothing about it as I understand when I post our Opry replies I know not everybody is interested or knows what I'm on about but I understand the fact and will always accept a "Well Done"

And just to add I do agree with the replies to the post so far 🙂 and it's our pension also 🙂 thats is the job cuts dont affect us 😞 so get writing everybody it's the taking part that counts!

It can be difficult to find something to say other than "well done" when the post is something you don't know much about. I don't watch Eastenders but I like to see the cards they send out and I try to give some encouragement. Same goes for many of the football replies. I may not know the player involved but it's interesting to see the cards they send and also the shirts that so many of you have signed. Should we stop well done-ing? I don't know. Maybe we should only respond to the posts that we share an interest in. Good point Nigel.

I only read the first few replies i have a habbit of reading them after i have posted a well done or given a small comment on the result i made a slight mistake with the Firth reply the other day but rectified it as soon as i had read the rest of the comments but i think it should be down to the individual person on how they reply to a post ,as some replies do not interest me at all but i still say something ,i like seeing your Dr Who replies regardless wether they are a big star or a small bit part actor as i like them and your Watford replies are great as you manage to find loads of players ,also some members get more replies than others and a well done lets them know that people have looked at thier reply and are pleased for them getting a reply .

I can honestly see both sides of this, I comment on most of the threads that I take the time to read, even if it is just a well done (I certainly dont claim to be the most creative with words, lol) I do always mean it though and feel words of encouragement can go a long way, its also my way of aknowledging and appreciating the fact that the original poster took the time to share their success.

However I don't ready all the threads, you will hardly ever see me comment on a cricket or rugby thread as i have no interest at all in these sports, in fact I would admit to being totaly ignorant of them, therefore any comment I made would not realy mean anything.

I can also understand the frustration of having to read through a pile of well dones before coming to a post with more substance but that doesnt always make the said post any more important or meaningful

an interesting topic Nigel, I've enjoyed reading peoples different points fo view on this

I read and reply to every post and I feel guilty if I miss one . I have no interest in cricket Eastenders or I'm sorry to say Nigel Dr Who but I fell that if a member has taken the time to make a card search for an address write a letter and then post their result on the forum then I should take a bit of my time to post a reply to their result , I'm saying well done to them for taking the time to get the result and it's a genuine well done as I know how long some requests take to put together . If we only posted replies to things that interest us then some members might get no replies at all and I think that would soon put the member off and stop them posting there must be nothing worse than taking the time to post something and no one replies to your post .

On your point about replies with the " WOW " factor Nigel , who can say what a cracking reply is . You might have tried for a long time to get a Watford player or an actor from Dr Who who is particularly hard to get and you feel you have done really well getting him but if no other member has any interest in the subject then you would get no " well done's " and that would put you off I think .

I also think a few "well done's " give people a wee lift and a bit of encouragement to send more requests out so I'll keep posting my replies on every post mate . . . .

I just had a thought Nigel you posted on the charity book thread a while ago that not a lot of people posted on the results and you asked if there was any point of continuing with the thread , the same thing could happen to the TTM threads if people stopped posting " well done " .

#16 - Brian, I know what you are saying, but that post is a bit different as it is a long running single thread and was largely being ignored. I was more curious about whether it was needed or not as this is a ttm forum.

The ttm posts are different as they are unique, and the time it takes to check each one after it has been updated is a real waste if there is no substance to what you end up seeing. I get really irritated when I check to see what is being said, only to see the last few posts were bland two word replies.

Not everyone has the time to give a long winded pat on the back to every reply im guilty on most occasions of giving a two word reply to posts but i wound rather get a well done than nothing at all.How many times have we given out about people not replying to posts and only LURKING.. what drives me mad is you take the time and effort to put a tread up get 50 or 60 people looking at it and only 10 to 20 people reply to it, if you look at it at least leave a well done it only takes a few seconds.I might have no intrest or know who the person is ( cricket or actors ) but if i look at a tread i will always leave a comment even if its only two words.I maybe have 10 min at a time a day to look at treads so cut people like me a bit of slack.
