I sent a pair of vintage speakers via courier using eBay’s Simple Delivery procedure. The speakers were damaged in transit and don’t work. I have refunded the buyer. How do I get my £80 back from EBay that I refunded?

You won't as you went about it all wrong.

The buyer should have opened a case using damaged in transit and then ebay takes over, including doing the refund.

Now you have refunded there is no mechanism to get your money back.

Oh nooo, you've gone about this the wrong way, acting first then seeking the answer after !

Two excellent things re Simple Delivery are that eBay pay for any items damaged in transit, or for those lost in the post, but to do this, the correct process needs to be followed.

Which is, the Buyer opens the relevant case, eBay step in refund the buyer, and the seller gets to keep the payout.

You've refunded outside a case, so cannot now retrieve that money.

You could contact Customer Services, explain your error, they just may make a concessionary refund back to you, but no guarantees, and I strongly recommend you try at 8 a.m. on a weekday as there's more chance of Dublin answering. Only speak to them, it's a Call Back option so you'll hear if it's Ireland callin' ! You can try at 9 a.m. tomorrow, but again only speak to Dublin.

Thanks for your reply. I did ask the buyer to open a case and he did this. I responded to the automated message requiring a refund or partial refund. So it was refunded through eBay’s refund procedure. It didn’t appear to give me an option, nor did it mention what you have advised. I did engage with the automaton/robot, but got nowhere in record time.

If you used Simple Delivery and the buyer did open a case , eBay should have taken over and refunded.

Now your money from the payout may be on hold, and may well be released IF eBay refunded the buyer themselves.

Unfortunately, we as members like yourself have no access to your account to see the status of payouts held / pending etc.

Contact CS on Monday at 8 a.m. with my link above, you'll speak to a live agent, and hopefully Dublin, for them to clarify how this refund was made.

It's likely that your buyer used the wrong reason for the case, not realising the difference it makes to who refunds.

As far as I know ebay will not overturn the case decision now, although they might have changed the reason if asked to before the refund was made.

If you had used Simple Delivery, you would not have been asked to respond to the case or refund.

If it is the 'Castle Richmond' speakers, they were not sold with Simple Delivery as the postage option - it may be that such items are not eligible.

So, although you may have purchased the Evri label via Packlink/Ebay, it wasn't Simple Delivery and you need to pursue your claim with Evri - via Packlink if you bought the label through Ebay.

That’s the route I’ve gone down. There’s a limit of £25 on compensation after jumping through various hoops. Wish me luck and thanks to all who have offered advice and info.
