Special delivery for a £750+ item

I plan to auction a vinyl record which could fetch quite a bit over £750. I plan to do the thing where you say in the description that it's free postage and when creating the listing choose Simple Delivery and 'seller pays', then print the label to get the buyer's address and then separately arrange Special Delivery myself with RM. If that's all correct my only question is how does ebay's system find out that the item was delivered?

I suggest you start it at £751 and then you will get custom postage from the start.

If you do it your way then ebay won't know it's been delivered as you can't add new tracking.

The need for secure delivery is ony one of the risks of selling an item of this value.

Have you consdered the possibility that a buyer might claim some defect, and then return a different and damaged copy of this record - or a different record altogether? If so, how confident are you that eBay would find in your favour, and not the buyer's?

I'm not suggesting answers, just that these are questions you should ask yourself. Personally, I would not sell anything of such value here.

Thanks for replying. That's a useful point. I'm a little reluctant to start the auction that high for fear of putting off potential bidders, but will think it through.

Be aware, whatever the start price for your auction is, you may only receive one bid and you'd then have to sell it for that start price.

Never list items starting for less than you're happy to receive, if you do then only receive one bid, which more than often happens, you won't be disappointed.

Thanks for replying and I take your point. I'll likely still go ahead though. I'd be joining others who've sold this LP on ebay: it tends to sell a few times a year on ebay, most recently last December and then January, selling for £1,037 and £1,125. Someone else has just listed it for auction starting at £399. Also I only list here in the UK and am quite detailed with describing and photographing condition. Grateful for your view though.
