I can only congratulate you on understanding it. As far as I can see there is very little guidance on costs in ebay’s explanation of the FACTORS involved, or why fees should be taken other at time of sale and payment. Just a thought, do they take fee for clicks on sale and campaign fee when buyer pays.

“When you promote your listings using a priority strategy, your campaign will use a cost-per-click (CPC) model. You’ll only pay for clicks on your ads and the cost for each click is based on a second price auction, which means the fee charged will be determined by factors like listing quality, keyword relevance, your bid amount, competition from other sellers, and a reserve price (the minimum amount we've determined a click is worth, taking item quality, competition, “seasonality, and marketplace thresholds into consideration).

Unexpected Promoted Listing Fees

I want to preface this post by saying I understand how the Promoted Listings feature works, in as far as it tracks user clicks to determine if it contributed to them buying your item, but I am noticing inconsistencies in WHEN I am being charged these fees which leaves me suspicious of what I am actually paying for. I may be missing some key details of how it works but that is my current understanding.

So after one of my listings sell (which are all set as Promoted Listings), sometimes it doesn't say in my order details whether it was actually 'sold via the Promoted Listings' (in small green text below the sold item) so I assume it was simply sold organically with no help from the Promoted Listing status and I won’t have any fees to pay: logical assumption.

However when I check the order status days later, SOMETIMES it suddenly tells me it was 'sold via Promoted Listings' and then I get charged a fee I was not anticipating. Compare this with many other occasions where it immediately tells me if the item sold via Promoted Listings in the order details and you can understand how this feels like I am being conned by paying eBay more money. I mean how do I even know it truly sold via the Promoted Listings, and why is it out-of-the-blue suddenly telling me my item sold via Promoted Listings and charging me AFTER I have withdrawn funds from my account?
