I would try a different post office, as the one you are using clearly don't know their own rules.

I have sold costume jewellery, bundles of fabric, baby clothes, ladies clothes, and many other things. As long as they go through the slot it's a large letter. My jewellery (which is a similar item to a badge) has always gone in a bubble envelope as a large letter. Ask him to show you the rule that says it has to be paper.

Alternatively, if you know for sure that the package will fit through the slot - ie, because you've sent the exact same thing before, just buy yourself a book of large letter stamps, and put the items in the post box.

I am selling my collection of Olympic and other sports pins. When sending to European destinations (and elsewhere), I usually use bubble lined mailers which offer protection and are easy to use but they are bigger than a letter size envelope. They do fit through the RM large letter RM window/slot gauge when packed, yet the postman at the counter says that they cannot be sent as large letters only as a package. That of course makes the postage a lot higher. The pins I sell cost mostly 2-4 GBPs each) The large letter postage is fairly reasonable but sent as a package it's kind of costly and discourages buyers. (The mailers measure 8.5 x 6.5 x 0.5cm).

I don't understand why a bubble lined envelope when filled fits through the RM large letter gauge cannot be charged the large letter postage. He says that only papers can be sent via Large letter. Does anyone know if this is true?

Today I am sending one in a regular small envelope wrapped in bubble wrap and will see what he says since it's obviously not a bubble lined mailer (like Mail Lite).

Any advice? Thanks. PS I have looked on the Royal Mail website and cannot find anything that restricts the contents of Large letter sized envelopes to just papers.

He's talking utter rot!

Anything that falls within the parameters of the large letter sizing (and it's not all about the thickness either, there is a size parameter too).

I'd be inclined to take your post elsewhere in future or have a word with his supervisor.
